From what I can gather, he has only visited MSU and Michigan, so I too think it is between those two schools. And every online gossip article also mentions Michigan in the lead, so where there is smoke.....

Isn't Gardner the "athletic type" QB rather than the drop back passer type? Why would he go to MSU?
I'm not disparaging MSU (there will be plenty of time for that later!), but just asking...

Isn't Keith Nichol (savior) an "athletic" QB? I don't think MSU is married to the Pro-Style (especially with so few players that will ever make the pros - zing!).

I believe the proper name is Keith "savior" Nichol. I don't know if he's related to Tate "savior" Forcier. It's weird that they both have the same middle name...

No, that was Ryan Mallet's middle name until it was legally changed to "completely overrated bust who never fit into the system."

I agree. He's a perfect fit for the new UM offense, which should feature a 4 WR passing attack, much like Oklahoma. He's a good size QB - 6'4 - who's very mobile for his size, possessing an above average arm. And the added bonus of throwing to Ricardo Miller and company, would be nice.
And all the WRs UM is bringing in, you can't negative recruit and tell Gardner that he'll never get a chance to throw at Michigan ... he will.
Michigan is also close to adding another WR/CB commit; D.J. Williamson .. from Warren, OH (marion manningham). I think he'll play CB at UM.

I think the only way RR gets Williamson is if he promises him the starting QB job.

I only mentioned that -- obviously, because there are certain areas of Ohio that are Michigan territories, and this is one of them.

Shelton pretty much answered this.....but I'll try to add to his response.
I actually posted this a while back, but word out of EL is that MD wants to alternate pro-style QBs with dual threat QBs on his roster. Which is supposedly why he wants either Gardner or Bolden, while Boisture got the cold shoulder. Nichol is dual threat and Maxwell is pro-style, so he wants another dual threat to come in after Maxwell. Supposedly, this is what OSU does as well, so that may be where MD got this from.

Just my opinion....but what I think solidifies Gardner to Michigan is the fact that after his MSU visit, he said he would name leaders in the summer (but might not commit). Now, all of a sudden, he's ready to commit. Obviously something happened between his MSU visit and today, but if he wasn't this confident in his decision right after the MSU visit (when your excitement for a school would seemingly be at its highest), I doubt he would be jumping for MSU now.
Just my thought. I also think we will not have lost much if we end up with Bolden....but if we don't get Bolden either, that would be a serious blow.

I wouldn't know. I just checked rivals, though, and he appears to be the top dual threat QB from CA, and the 3rd overall QB from CA. Still, "better than Threet" is good enough for me.

My Opinion
Barkley (USC)
Brehaut (UCLA)
Nunes (Stanford)
Bridgeford (Cal)
Forcier (UM)
Tate faced much lower level competition than all of these guys.

I was only joking with you Benke, mainly because you called Mario, Marion. As in a girl's name.
But seriously, don't do it again.

Insider at Buckeyeplanet says Gardner to UM. http://www.buckeyeplanet.com/forum/2...ml#post1426455
Moderator on the next page of that thread says the guy claiming that is a proven insider and trustworthy -- I dunno, but I doubt he's just a random Joe.

I think a potentially optimal situation would be Gardner committing to UM, honoring the commitment, coming in and red-shirting his first year. Or maybe even better yet, enroll early and become a viable back-up option allowing Denard Robinson to use his speed as a receiver or DB. Then again this actually happening picture perfect is not so probable. Also, this is obviously assuming Tate beats out DRob. I really just want wins.

Last I heard Gardner had moved up his announcement date again, from Monday to Michigan's first spring practice. But now the DetNews is reporting its already done.

I wonder if RR asked Gardner to announce before the weekend to maybe add a little more excitement to their Junior day and encourage other kids to sign over the weekend?

Its probably silly to say particular individuals are "must have" players...but MSU better get Bolden to commit to the Spartans.

As Michigan illustrated last year, its always good to have depth at the QB position.

Actually, I (gulp), agree with RJBrez... I just don't see a true need for a QB in the 2010 class. And our situation (two sophs and a true frosh - two of them Elite 11 Qb's) for next year doesn't paint a favorable depth picture either. If we get Bolden, I'd be pretty impressed.

I guess there isn't a need, per se, but theres no guarantee when it comes to QBs. Maxwell kind of blew up after the Elite 11 camp, but theres no telling whether thats legit or will be maintained. I'd rather not pine my hopes on one guy, especially when we have the opportunity in-state to get Bolden. (Assuming Maxwell redshirts, he (or the class of 2010 QB) could be a two year starter. So I'm not too concerned about Nichol being in the way). Hypothetically, theres always next year, but I don't know what next year has to offer (what would we be talking here, high school freshmen.... ) thats why I said I wanted to get the talent when its sitting right there. These 3 in-state QBs could all be the best QB in Michigan any given year. The state is loaded in 2010, to miss out on all 3 would sting.

Hello: Devin Gardner
Quote:
Michigan received a verbal commitment from Inkster junior quarterback Devin Gardner late Wednesday. Gardner is 6-foot-3 and weighs 185 pounds. He was named to The Detroit News all-state first team after leading Inkster to the Division 3 final.
"I was surprised," Inkster coach Greg Carter said. "I thought it would be a last-minute thing. He told me he wanted his mom (Marlene McClellan) to be a part of his football experience. He knows what a Michigan education can do for him in this area when he's done playing. That's the type of conversation I had with Cam (Cameron Gordon)."

I just read that DickRod is lying to Gardner, that he'll never take a snap at QB. They're going to put him on defense as either a S or LB
