No place like home
As much as I enjoyed going to Erie, there is no place quite like back at Fifth third ballpark with my own team--even though it was their worst loss of the season. The team seemed dead--but a 12 inning victory the night before may sometimes do that to you--and I am guessing a few of them celebrated afterward. Last night they announced the 2009 All Stars for West Michigan and we have a pretty good representation:
Congratulations to Jared Gayhart, Casey Crosby, Tyler Stohr, Mauricio Robles, Ronnie Bourquin, and Brandon Douglas for making it to the 2009 All Stars. A comment by Joe DePastino to a few of us fans was that Gustavo Nunez should have made it too, but the votes were turned in before he really started getting hot. I am hoping that our coaching staff will be joining the six guys in Clinton on June 23.
Ah yes, last night's game. Whitecaps lost 16-4 to the Loons in spite of 3 errors by them and only one error by the Caps. Whitecap's pitching struggled as the Loons managed to find all the gaps. I witnessed a great deal of effort by the Caps to get to the batted balls, but the Loons managed to find holes. (Remember too, that the Dodgers have really stacked the Loons roster with prospects to try to give them a good year this year). Whiteaps did have a decent night at the plate-- Nunez went 2-5 with two runs scored, Douglas went 3-5, Bourquin went 3-4, Pounds and Bowen each had a hit, and then there was my boy Luis Salas. Salas hit his 3rd home run of the season. Way to go Luis!! The boys were hitting the ball, just did not come up with the clutch hits that would make a difference in the run column.
But when all is said and done, you have to give credit where credit is due. The Loons launched an offensive attack that gave them a well deserved victory. I have to tip my cap to Jaime Pedroza of the Loons, who hit for the cycle in last night's game. He hit the first cycle in the Loons franchise history.

greeting at the dugout after that half inning
I was kind of disappointed that the Whitecaps did not acknowledge it in any way. I mean, I know it was kind of a humiliating loss to the Whitecaps, but there are enough fans there that appreciate good baseball, and hitting for the cycle is not an easy accomplishment. The Whitecaps acknowledge a no hitter by the other team, so why not the cycle? That young man deserved some applause.
Anyway, with the loss, we split the series with the Loons and our record stands at 33-20. Since Fort Wayne also lost last night, we are still in first place in the league by 1.5 games. Today it is off to Lansing to watch the boys play the Lugnuts.
