Left-hander Nate Robertson, a candidate for the fifth starter's job in the Tigers' rotation, left Wednesday's game against the Mets after an errant throw struck him in his pitching hand.

More like Nate not being in the right position.

Frankly, I'm not that broken up about Nate being out.

Did Porcello move up on the depth chart today?

Errant throw?
He was late covering first and tried to bare-hand the ball. Don't blame the throw.

I don't think he tried to barehand the ball, he was trying to use his glove, he just didn't get it there in time and that's where the ball hit him.

So Willis over Robertson would cost the team how many games?

Agree... I didn't see any attempt to reach with his bare hand -- which is the ultimate act of stupidity for a pitcher in ST, IMO...

I think the Everett sprain is a bigger deal, even if it's just a mild sprain. The Tigers should have enough arms around to cover any prolonged Nate absence.

I was exaggerating a little bit, but it's really not that far off. If he's good enough to make the team then that means there are some real problems with the pitching. If he keeps up the form that he has been in every single day for the last two years, he'll lose at least 20 as a starter.

I think it would be if it was most serious. They said Everett is day-to-day and since it was only a grade 1 sprain I bet he'll be back in a week or so and be ready for opening day.

I found it odd in the newest article on Tigers.com "Tigers roll after Robertson's exit" it said Robertson was in a battle for the 5th starter W/ Porcello..
surprise to me

I believe that's accurate. I don't think Willis or Miner will start unless Bonderman and Robertson are both unable to start the season in the rotation.

As the 5th starter, Robertson wouldn't pitch until April 10th, and they could finish the month using the 5th starter only 3 times with the off days. So even if he missed some time, it's no big deal.

Has anyone heard a timeline for his return?
I think this gives Porcello a better chance to impress. I hate it for Nate to lose any time when he seemed to be getting his act together but I still think hes the front runner.
Maybe Porcello goes north if Nate is healthy to start the year? Or maybe the Willis expirement goes into april for one or two starts? Or Bonine (whose still in camp gets a shot)?
But since the fifth starter wasnt expected to start the home opener, due to Leyland's reasoning, id think that it doesnt matter in terms of roster construction if Nate misses his first turn through due to injury.
The big thing, to me is, that this leaves the door open for Willis, Bonine, and Porcello to impress while Nate is out.
