What's the allure of going to the bar? Up until recently I haven't really gone to bars. Lately, I've gone a few times and I don't think I've missed anything. I don't personally enjoy overpaying for beer, not being able to hear the person next to me, sitting in a plce that smells like vomit, and leaving smelling like a Marlboro factory.
So, I ask, why do people enjoy going to bars? I'm not talking about restaurants with bars, or bars like Champs, or sports bars, but you local alcohol slinging, hole in the wall, too many people crammed in, music blaring place.

And that's why I don't go.

Why do people go to churchs, college, baseball games, bowling, putt putt golfing, etc. We all find different things in different places. We all have these rights called freedoms, it's a fantastic concept. But don't worry, I'm sure they'll keep raising taxes on bar owners to the point that they close them down. I personally don't go to the bar anymore, but I'm not going to jump on someone who does. Just because I don't like it, some dude or dudette may. I also don't go to church, but some dude or dudette may, and that's fantastic. Some people like to smoke, I don't, but hell man, smoke em' if you gotta em', cuz we all dying anyways, baby.
That was like a mini-rant or something. Sweet.

Oh, and plus that.
Really, what more reason do you need?

I usually go to our hole in the wall on Mondays. I like it because it's quiet, usually the same people every week. I sit at the bar and look down the barmaid's shirt as she washes the glasses. She has no clue, right?

I was at a bar last night.
Obviously, people like to go, or else there wouldn't be one on almost every frigging corner in America's cities.

I don't go to the bar that often anymore. The main reason is that being a recent home owner, I have no freaking money. And the other is I just hate cigarette smoke and I hate that smell on my clothes. I wish this state would get with it and ban the smoking in bars, but it will never, ever happen here.

I challenge someone to find a city with a population of more then, hmm .. lets' say 1,000? That doesn't have a Bar, Church, Bank and McDonalds on the same street! :)

You do realize they won't stop with just the banning of smoking, right? Once we give up one right, there will be more to follow. I don't smoke, but I have a hard time with this banning of smoking. What's next? I think we should all be a little scared. But, I guess being free is less attractive then not having to wash the smoke smell out of your clothes.

You'll have better luck at the grocery store. Just stand near the vegetables and watch.

Our bowling team goes to this microbrewery in Warren before we bowl. The beer is unique, the place is smoke free, and if you go to the same place enough, people act like they know you. And I can always find a seat.
That's my pet peeve about bars. If you can't find a seat -- there's no point in being there. It's too crowded to have a good time.

I don't smoke and I don't go to bars unless I'm going to see some live music. That said, smoking should not ever be outlawed in bars. What needs to happen is stricter air purity standards. Everybody wins.

OK, there's some good responses here, but I want to clarify some things. First off, I have no problem with others going to the bar, if that's their thing, so be it. It isn't my place to tell other people what they should or shouldn't do. Secondly, a bar that's quiet and has the same people would probably be a good time. Third, what bar did you get that picture at, Yoda? They sure as heck aren't hangin' out in Mt. Clemens...

This is my problem as well. I go to a bar to relax, which isn't all that often anyhow. But nothing is as uncomfortable than a crowded bar. I have no use for them.

I really like the policy some bars I go to have...
Prior to 10 p.m. there is no smoking allowed, the lights aren't quite as dim, and the music isn't quite as loud. Once 10 hits, people can smoke, the lights go down, and the music goes up, but at least you have a chance to go enjoy a drink without having to put up with those, if you don't want to.

Look at the bright side. If she's exposed to enough second-hand smoke and dies reasonably young, you won't have to fear waking up next to someone twice your age ....
