Below strikes out 14 in Whitecaps victory
Posted by Whitecaps Media Dept. on Sat, 12 May 2007 02:19:16 +0000.

COMSTOCK PARK – Duane Below fell one short of a Whitecaps team record as he struck out 14 batters in six innings on the mound to lead West Michigan to a 4-2 win over Cedar Rapids. The victory was the third in a row for Below and prevented the Whitecaps from being swept in a four game set for the first time since 2005.

I was sitting next to a friend of Duane Below's family tonight at the game. It was fun watching his face light up as Duanes success (and strikeouts) continued throughout the game. I have not seen a strikeout rate like that by a Whitecap since Joel Zumaya struck out 14 batters in 7 innings in 2003. That was a fun game.

Must have been a good evening. I met some of Below's family on one of the early days of Pre-ST. I was not familiar with him at the time.

Was there a reason he was pulled in the 6th? I'm assuming his pitch count was high or the coaches didn't want to push him too much.

It was pitch count. Below was at his limit. I read an article that mentioned that Brookens didn't know how many k's he had. He didn't know until afterward, but said that the record, had he known, wouldn't have been a factor in the decision.
