The Tigers are 12-9 while the Indians are 11-7, yet the Indians are in first place. Why is this? Don't they go by wins in the standings?

Winning percentage.
A combination of wins and losses. The Indians have 2 less losses. We have 1 more win. We are 0.5 games behind them.

The Indians are pansies, and can't play as many games as the Tigers do ...

Here's the simplest way to calculate standings, Joe, and I'll probably make it sound messy. The standings measure half the difference in how many games from .500 a team is.
Cleveland is 4 games over. Detroit is 3 games over. That's 1 game difference. Half that is your 1/2 game lead.
Red Sox are six games over. Yankees are 3 games under. That's 9. Half that and you have their 4.5 game difference in the standings.

They only go by wins when determing who is the Cy Young winner

I still think it rocks that Shef, Monroe, Inge are hitting bad, Rogers is injured, our pen is weak, and we're still in second.
That's pretty dang good! Wait til we're healthy and playing to our ability.

Chas, I always used the RIOT number, which right now is apparently 134.
