Mesa suspended two games
As if the Tigers aren't losing enough players as it is, Jose Mesa will miss the first two games next week. He'll serve out a suspension he received with the Rockies for intentionally throwing at Omar Vizquel last September. It was originally a three-game suspension when it was issued last year, but he appealed it down.

On the topic of Mesa, I was browsing the microfilm newspaper archives at the University of Windsor library the other day, and was reading the articles during Detroit's 1987 playoff run, and I came across the recap of the September 30th, 1987 game when Baltimore beat Detroit 7-3. Jose Mesa pitched 8.2 innings for Baltimore and was charged with 3 runs. It was just amusing to read about Mesa in the context of an up and coming prospect. It was also amusing how one of our signings this off season was around back in the 1987, although there are, of course, a handful of other active players who were still around back then as well.

Anyway that's my pointless story for the day.

That's interesting. For all his failed-prospect headlines, Mesa turned himself into a 20-year major leaguer. Not bad.

They're dropping like flies.

Can we give the Twins and Sox the titles of '07 Central Champs and AL Wild Card yet? :cheeky:

Actually being suspended for the first two games is about the best possible outcome if he's to serve a suspension. One would hope that the rest of the Tigers bullpen would be sufficient for the first game of the season. On Day two the Tigers do not play, it is a day off, meaning that everybody gets a rest. Day three is their second game, where again, one would hope that the rest of the bullpen would be sufficient.

When he comes back for the third game, that may be the first time in the year where he's truly needed anyway.

Exactly. I don't really think that Mesa has failed at all. I know people are down on him but look over his career its actually a pretty darn good one.

At one time, Mesa could throw as hard as anybody, but his fastball was a lot like Matt Anderson's. Hard, but straight and very hittable. He tends to throw strikes, so that's good. As a middle reliever, he isn't a bad guy to have around. He's 41, so he's on his last legs.

The continued viability of Jose Mesa and Neifi Perez reflect the same principle: the more you've played, the more you'll play. Nothing rates like experience.

Just as it is incredible that Neifi Perez has earned $18.5 million as a baseball player so far, it is equally amazing that Jose Mesa has earned $32.1 million.

I don't think that they are equal players at all. Looking over Mesa's career I wouldn't call him great but I would call him an average middle reliever. To equate that to Neifi Perez is faulty.

Mesa has had some good seasons. Neifi had some fair statistical seasons, but they came in Colorado. You or I could probably bat .220 in Colorado and hit 15 homers.

Viability may be stretching things a bit with the terminology Chuck.

How about survival?

Mesa was at least pretty productive for a while in his career, and he's average (if not slightly below) now. Neifi was never decent.

Perez used to be an excellent fielder. That is not enough in today's game but it counts for something. He probably should have been a utility player instead of a starter. Now that he can't field so well, he is useless in any role.

Mesa has had some pretty good years. He is not as bad as his reputation and he is probably not the worst pitcher on their current staff.

In other words, Neifi would have been a suitable everyday player if it werent for the likes of Ripken, Sandberg, Trammell, Whitaker, etc, etc, etc, turning middle infield positions from strong fielding positions into strong offensive positions....:silly:

At no time did I ever say that that Neifi Perez and Jose Mesa were equal. They are not. I only say that because they are still getting work, long after every major league team should be passing on them, because they are known commodities. They play now because they've been playing. In that vein they are similar. That's what I meant.
