Announced today that Comerica Bank (the company) is moving it's headquarters to Dallas. Should they keep the Comerica Park name? How do you see this playing out?

They don't have a choice as long as the Bank keeps sponsoring the stadium.

There aren't any other businesses left to sponsor the stadium anyway.

But hey, as long as Detroit is a "cool city", maybe the kids will stay here!

Do they even have Comerica Bank in Dallas? Did they merge with another bank? I've never seen a Comerica outside of Michigan.

I'd rather see the park without a corporate sponsor, but I guess it does bring in revenue for the team. I think Comerica owns the naming rights through 2030, but they could sell them. FleetBank merged with Bank of America and sold the naming rights to the FleetCenter. Now it's the Banknorth Garden.

I like the name Comerica because it doesn't sound coporate to outsiders.

Comerica is definately in Texas... there are a few locations here in the Dallas area that I've seen, though I don't bank with them.

All I know is I would hate to see the Tigers chage stadium names all the damn time. I would be happiest if it was not corp. sponsored. Name it Tigers Field or after one of Detroit's Legendary players or something.

They are under contract until 2011 I think. Not exactly sure if its 2011 or 2010. But yea, It'll atleast be COPA a few more years at the pretty price of 2.2 million per year...

It was a 30 year contract. Its not up until 2030. It could change if Comerica is bought out like Folley suggested in another thread.

I think that it is longer than that.....They usually have to sigh a 20-30 year deal to get naming rights.

Here ya go....Comerica bought naming rights for $66 million over 30 years...

Comerica Bank paid $66 million over 30 years beginning in 1998 for naming rights to the ballpark

The Tigers changed the name of the old park 2 times before settling on Tiger Stadium. It was first Navin Field from 1912-1938 then changed to Briggs Stadium 1938-1961 and finally Tiger Stadium from 1961-1999.

If they change the name of the Comerica in 30 years (assuming they still play there)... It would be with the same tradition.

I would love to see them honor a great Tiger figure. Naming it something like Harwell Field, Kaline Field, Greenberg Stadium, or Rod Allen Park.

Its more likely they will sell it to the highest bidder again though.

So if 1,000 MotownSports.com subscribers chipped in $2,200 each, could we get the park's name changed to MotownSports Park for a year?

I think he was referring to how some stadiums have had multiple name changes within a period of just a few years.

Why not? Tiger Stadium was going to be the name of the new ballpark too anyways. Chicago called the new park Comiskey for a while, why can't we do the same?

Don't call it COPA. And stop letting your pinky drift off of your wine cooler bottle.I have a weak pinky that has a mind of it's own. I've been doing some workouts, but haven't gained much mass there at all. So I'll just have to tape it down and tough it out !!!

WDFN tried to get the Copa nickname to stick but it never did. Thankfully.

Comerica is a good name. When I hear it I think of a nice summer evening watching baseball. I don't think of a bank.

Cadillac park has a nice historical ring considering he was the founder of Detroit and it has the reputation of first class due to the automobile it represents. I doubt though that GM would pony up the money for the rights.

Thanks alot FT.

Honestly, I really have no idea if you ever went to Tiger Stadium or not. But it was a once in a lifetime stadium for me. Comerica is awesome in it's own right. But IMO, it should never, ever be named Tiger Stadium. There is only one TS and that's the way it should stay.

That's the problem with naming rights. Despite the benefits it opens up cans of worms like this all the time.

Agreed. I don't want it to change.

I know but I thought I would go over the history of TS getting its name.

I agree. I thought it was time for Tiger Stadium to either be upgraded or replaced but I was glad the new park was not named Tiger Stadium. Comerica isn't the perfect name but if you are going to have coporate sponsorship its as good as it gets.

I don't like the word "stadium". That's for football. Baseball is a field or a park.

Yeah, "stadium" makes me think of all those Godawful cookie-cutter parks they built in the 1960's and 1970's

Actually, Cadillac Field isn't bad at all!

But I've grown so used to Comerica, and I'm since I'm no longer in southeast Michigan, most of the time I forget it's a bank. Except for all those dang commercials.

I hope you have the point down that They listen, They understand, and they make it work. Every pitching change, between innings, anything. But that's expected.

edit: It just dawned on me that we should name it Rock Financial BallPark.Think about it, on top of all the annoying advertising they already have, why not add on?
