View Full Version : Motown Tigers Awards 2006

The votes have been counted and it's time to announce the Motown Tigers Awards for 2006. These awards only cover the forums related to baseball - Tigers, Minor Leagues, Major Leagues. The Pistons, Redwings, Lions, Politics and other types of morons can do their own awards. Just to be clear, the Tigers awards consider the opinions of others but they are my awards (Bert said so) so I have the most votes.

First, the Rookie of the Year. In the last two years, this award went to more traditional type fanatics - Bert and Red Shark. This year, the award goes to sabergeek deluxe chasfh. Sabermetric discussion, a long time staple of these forums, had become stagnant and boring. Sabermetrics was in a major slump on this board until chasfh came this year and brought the numbers back to life.
chasfh backs up every argument with an array of very relevant statistical tables and facts. He also writes very clearly and makes it easy for most people to understand his points. Even the best debaters have a hard time finding weaknesses in his reasoning. And he loves to debate with anyone - saber or non-saber. He'll listen to and address all counter-arguments and most of the time will prove them wrong.

Very well said. I couldn't agree more. His style is very refreshing. It amazes me the numbers he comes up with at times and how clearly he explains them. He has more patience than I do, thats for sure.

Excellent choice on the ROY. One thing Chas is very good at is acknowleging opposing opinions as good ones nontheless. I see an Albert Pujuls type career. He came on suddenly and has been good ever since.

I guess I don't know the rules. Maybe I should've read the other forum better. Tiger337- you are making the choices? Or is it a few people? If it is you why you? I don't mean that in a negative light how was that determined? I'm guessing you must've been the one to really hit this hard last year or a few years back?

A few people mentioned that the MVP award should be named after the late beloved Billy Ringo and the agreement was unanimous. I had a hard time deciding this award this year as there were a few candidates with different strengths. I went back and forth between the final three candidates several times but finally decided that the 2006 Billy Ringo MVP is Yoda. Yoda is very knowledgable about the Tigers and about many of their top prospects. He is neither a saber nor a purist but is very versatile. In one post, he'll be using statistics to fuel a debate about Craig Monroe. In the next post, he'll give us info on Kyle Sleeth's first start after rehab. In the following post, he'll be talking about the hot chick he saw at Joker Marchant the other night.
Most of all, Yoda wins because of his community spirit. There is a familiar pattern with just about every new poster on the board. First Yoda greets you warmly. Then he irritates the hell out of you for a couple of weeks. After that, he becomes your friend. He loves a good debate about any subject and he's locked horns with just about everyone on the board at one time or another but it always ends with a handshake. I think more people feel like they know Yoda personally (even though most have never met him) than any person in the Tiger forums. Like Billy, Yoda has a big heart. This, along with his excellent baseball contributions, make him invaluable to the board.

It's just my own little toy and should not be taken seriously. I did it on a whim one year and people seemed to enjoy talking about it. So now it's an annual event.

chasfh is a rookie? He sure doesn't seem like one. Congrats!
He's an old rookie though so we probably can't expect much improvement. I think he'll age well though. I don't expect a big decline in the near future.
That was touching... thanks man! Clearly the value of this award has gone down a bit. I'd like to thank everyone that puts up with me, and most of all, the hot chicks at Marchant Stadium. I thought several others deserved it more but I'm not one to start an argument. :)

Thank you very much for the ROY award. I'm pleased that my posts rate that kind of recognition.
I understand that my stat-vomiting is a key reason for the award, and I am pleased that that is accepted and even appreciated by some in this forum. But I am more gratified by the recognition of other attributes that were mentioned. I personally value fairness and honesty very highly, and I was floored by Oblong's mention of that. I regard that as among the rarest but highest of compliments, and I thank you for that.
I'm always a bit sheepish to mention things like this because I don't like looking like a blind homer, but I think it is fair to say that this forum has some of the highest quality posters of any forum I have ever habituated. The level of game here is intense, and it keeps a participant on his toes, especially in the political forum. I look at some of the stuff I posted in ASBDT and shudder at the churlishness and amateurishness. There are some smart and tough customers here, and I think it has helped sharpen my thinking and writing skills, as well as my general approach. You guys have helped me a lot, because those are the kind of skills you can use effectively in real life too.
I look forward to engaging you all in discussion on all things Tigers, baseball and cetera during the coming year. Thank you again.

Great choices. And by picking Yoda you've proven that it isn't a popularity contest (ba-doom-boom). Although there's something wrong with a system that rewards a guy who lives in a warm climate and gets to watch live Tigers baseball just about year-round.
Chasfh really came out of nowhere this year and contributed some major geeking, and I'm sure that guys like Lee were happy to have someone to share the load.
Thank God that we have Tiger337 to sort these awards out every year. I'd rather place my trust in the undisputed King of the Tigers' forum (okay I stole that from Michael Buffer, talking about Budweiser) than resort to polling. What are we going to do in 50 years when he's gone? I don't have to worry about it, I'll be gone before he is. But when he's really senile and selects YoungsGuns in 2048, what are the rest of you going to do about it? It will be quite a conundrum.
I look forward to the posting of the pictures from the awards dinner.

I sure am glad there is an ignore feature.
I don't start a thread with a new random thought every 27 seconds. With 1000+ member board, if I started a thread about how the sky had an orangish tint to it yesterday there would be a page's worth of replies. Also, most of the replies in thread you start surround the fact that your points are border on the blatantly stupid.
I really could care less what certain members say to you, because I am pretty sure I have gotten just as many replies about the crap you have posted.
As for your last point, I have brought plenty of quality to this board, more than you could ever imagine. But since I don't feel like whipping my dick out so we can have this stupid contest, I will just continue taking solace in the fact that I am me, and you are you. I was actually just poking a bit of fun at them about the flirtiness. Although Biff flirts with seemingly everyone on here and DaYoop has been really coming on to me a lot lately, so I don't know why it is a problem.
