Everyone seems to be reflecting back on 2006. I thought I would look forward to 2007.

Jordan Tata becomes the ace of the Toledo staff. Although there is some movement up and down I-75 this summer, Tata stays with Toledo until the last week in July when he is the centerpiece of a "prospects for veteran" trade that brings in the likes of Todd Helton or Andruw/Chipper Jones.

One of the reasons Tata is traded is the emergence of Jair Jurrjens. JJ continues his descent up the ladder and is called up at the end of the AAA season. His name gets in the mix for a starter in 2008.

Frankie Delacruz continues to be an enigma. Flashes of brilliance followed by getting lit up. He neither improves nor hurts his prospect status.

Virgil Vasquez becomes a solid starter for Toledo. Doesn't get much buzz because he doesn't throw hard.

Durbin/Tankersley. One is traded/released just before the end of ST. The other becomes a decent fifth starter for Toledo.

Chris Homer starts out as the closer but gets hit too hard and too often. Corey Hamman, who started a few games in April, is moved to closer in May.
Some nagging injuries give Hamman the opportunity to get promoted to the bigs and he does well.

All is not bright with the rest of the pen. No one really emerges as a valuable contributor in 2007. They finally give up on Larrison, who then signs with another club and gets some PT in the majors.

Mike Rabelo is solid if not spectacular. A minor injury to Pudge moves Wilson to the stating catcher for two weeks and Rabelo is called up. Not much PT but he does get one and only one hit but it helps the Tigers win a crucial game.

The infield at Toledo has familiar names who produce familiar results. Again, some minor injuries give Tony G another shot and either Hannahan, Maples or Kirkland is called up when Inge gets hurt but not enough to go on the DL.

Fortunately, Maggs and Sheff play relatively injury-free in 2007 so there is no need to call up an OF. Clevlen regains his prospect-status and is nearly called up when Casey goes down and the Tigers consider moving Sheff to first. However, Sheff, who has otherwise been a solid citizen, reminds the press that he is not playing first. The Tigers moved Guillen over to first and call up Tony G. Others hoped that Maybin was called up. However, Maybin's all-star year at Erie makes Clevlen expendable. Trading him at his peak value, Brent is packaged with Tata in the above-mentioned trade.

Thanks to some solid starting, Toledo again makes the playoffs. However, the loss of Clevlen and Tata and JJ's promotion results in the Mud Hens losing in the first round.

Good stuff, so, why would we play anything on the field, when we already know the results ?

This is interesting and fun to "ponder".............Bob Costas word!!

........."We pondered for a long time and came up with the title, "Costas on the Radio""..................Hell, if I pondered for a long time, I could SURELY come up with something better than THAT, couldn't you ?

Pretty good Nate, but you're dead wrong about Tankersley being a 50/50 shot for 5th starter. What really happens is that he is handed the closer role by LP who thinks that he is Dennis Eckersley.

""JJ continues his descent up the ladder"...ha ha, now I know that you were drinking when you wrote this and had probably already pissed yourself. Also you forgot to mention Chris Shelton who goes .260/.340/.450 and in the process debunks the Leon Durham myth once and for all.

Kirkland though, Kirkland goes apeshit and hits 33 home runs and gets on base at a mediocre .340 clip, and keeps the errors under 30. He strikes out 168 times but BA starts talking him up. Randy Smith phones Terry Foster and reminds him that Kirkland wouldn't be in the organization if Smith hadn't signed Randall Simon. Foster prints it.

Clevlen finds that the lights in the International League aren't conducive to good play. Jack Hannahan's OBP is over .400 and he plays 2B like Lou Whitaker but the Tigers won't give him a second look; his major league chances may not be dead but they are certainly pining for the fjords (I stole that Python metaphor from Stephen Brunt).

Chad Durbin goes 5-0 with a 3.47 ERA against the Mud Hens. Mike Hessman is injured in training camp and the Mud Hens, never without a veteran bat, re-acquire Ernie Young in time for his 50th birthday celebration.

Excellent additions, Charles. To clarify my thoughts on JJ, he ascends the ladder.

I would love for Shelton to do well. If Clevlen, Tata and Shelton do well in Toledo this summer, I would say they would bring a top-notch player to Detroit for the pennant chase and beyond.

With the 25 man roster set, I would think the organization continues to decent down the ladder (are you with me Charles Liston?). So who will be with Toledo.

Starters:
Tata, Vasquez, Miner seems like locks.
Tankersley could get #4 if he stays a starter.
I am ready to put up JJ or DLC here but the Erie beat writer says they are staying in AA so who is the 5th starter?

Pen:
Dingman should be rehabbing here.
Vets like Byrdak, Vic D and Jason Karnuth.
Hamman, Homer, Zell move up.
Bazardo fits in, maybe as 5th stater?

Catcher:

Rabs getting starting gig.
Torrealba as backup? Do they carry three? If so, Johnson, Sardinha?

IF:

Shelton, Hooper, Santiago and Hannahan around the horn.
Hessman and Maples as backup.

OF:
Raburn, Watson, Clevlen, T Perez, Espinosa

No Kirkland. IIRC he was optioned to Erie (deservedly so). Hannahan's still with the organization, right? I'd hate to see him benched in favor of Hessman, but I'm guessing that's exactly what happens. He could actually help a team like the Twins.

I think Sardinha gets the backup catcher gig, with Torrealba in Erie.

I can't see Zell making the Hens. I think Hamman, Seay and Byrdak are your bullpen lefties. Darensbourg? I think he gets the axe, but I'm not sure. Four lefties in the bullpen seems like a bit much, particularly when they aren't all that good.

Big Toe, thanks for pointing that out. I even had it in my notes and still missed it. I've edited that change at 3B.

I was at AA/AAA games this weekend vs. Indians and yesterday when Tata pitched against JV.

Kirlkand looked fantastic, hitting a triple and double on Sat. vs. Chuck Lofgren of the Indians and had one of the 2 hits yesterday against JV. Not sure what the beef against him is, but, he looked as good as anyone on either field this weekend. Of course, the AAA guys had to face Adam Miller for 5 innings on Saturday and he was simply dominating!!

You guys should have seen the 450 ft. BOMB that Hessman hit off Tata in the early going yesterday, it was a thing of beauty.

Reporting on other players, I was not impressed with many players offensively. The Larish, (sunday was McIntyre at 2B) Hollimon, Dlugach infield was working as good as I've ever seen anyone. On the AAA side, defense was not as impressive..............

GREAT weekend of watching and observing players.

Also watched the Low A/A intrasquad yesterday, Gorky's K'd 3 times and Justice hit an opposite field BOMB which was impressive. Other than that, nothing much to report from those teams............

Two possibles besides Bazardo are Lopez and Bumstead. Bumstead had been working out with Toledo and I think Lopez has been a starter in the past.

:ponder: I have Bumstead at Erie but that could change.

As far as Lopez, are we talking George, Trini, Aurelio or Hector?

defnitely not Jennifer.

Jennifer is more of the back end of the bullpen type.

Lopez was a minor league signing over the winter who was working out with the AAA team. I have his name at home in my notes, not here. You pull up Lopez on Baseball America, you get 20+ names.

Bumstead may have already been moved down to the Erie squad, but he was one of the many working out with AAA last week.

Thanks for the game report, baseball3! Keep the info coming, the more the better...who's playing where, who looks like they'll be on what team, pitcher velocity...anything you can provide would be extremely welcome.

Thanks for clarifying that for me. Not in contention for the starting rotation, obviously.

He pitched the 9th for the Tigers today and the box score looks pretty good. 1ip 0r 0h 1w 0so. He also got the win.
