Billy Martin's connection with the Detroit Tigers was two-fold. First as a player, and later as a manager.
On this date, November 20, Billy Martin was traded to Detroit and traded away exactly one year later.
In his one year here, he started both at Shortstop (88 games) and Thirdbase (41). Frank Bolling was the primary 2nd baseman for the Tigers.
The trade that brought him here from the Kansas City Athletics was typical of many of the KC trades - lots of players:
November 20, 1957: Traded by the Kansas City Athletics with Mickey McDermott, Tom Morgan, Lou Skizas, Tim Thompson, and Gus Zernial to the Detroit Tigers for a player to be named later, Bill Tuttle, Jim Small, Duke Maas, John Tsitouris, Frank House, and Kent Hadley. The Detroit Tigers sent Jim McManus (April 3, 1958) to the Kansas City Athletics to complete the trade.
Well known for his exploits as a Tiger manager and getting them almost to the World Series in 1972, Billy also played one year with the Tigers in 1958.
His one year in Detroit was fairly typical of him - .255, little power, some "sac'ing".
One year later, he was traded away to Cleveland for two memorable Tiger pitchers:
November 20, 1958: Traded by the Detroit Tigers with Al Cicotte to the Cleveland Indians for Don Mossi, Ray Narleski, and Ossie Alvarez.
Billy would be traded 3 more times in the next 3 years as the backlash of his behavior followed him. His 1957 "behavior" at the Copa with Mickey Mantle led to the first trade in mid-1957 to KC.
Billy returned to the Motor City in 1972, replacing the legendary Mayo Smith.
Billy managed the Detroit Tigers from 1971 to 1973, taking the team to first place in 1972 but was fired in 1973 for ordering his pitchers to throw at batters.
