This is my last thread starter for today on here.
Anyway, what does everyone think about Todd Jones? As far as being dependable for next year?
Is it in Jones we trust, or do we need to make a decisive move to get him outta there?
He really didn't prove anything to me last year. Inlfated ERA most of the year. Three big clutch blown saves the last five weeks of the season. An almost blown save in the World Series.
I guess I'd stick with him if there is absolutely NOTHING out there to replace him. At least he throws strikes.
He just doesn't seem like a reliable "closer" to me. But if that's all there is for now, I can stomach another year of Todd Jones.

All I can say is - Thanks Todd for a great season.
I still don't trust him.

I'll ride the Jonesercoaster for another season - given the high ERA's, he certainly was able to get the job done for the most part.

Even his 1-2-3 innings are scary, but I still loved him. He deserves to win a WS in this town.

Yes... until he blows a couple.
Then it will be, "In Zoom I Trust."

He has 1 year left on his contract. He probably carries next to no trade value. To upgrade at closer with a new player would be costly, difficult (there are several teams with closer needs) and would block Zoom Zoom for even longer.
TJ had a year he can be proud of. If he falters next year, Zoom is there to take over. Do I trust him? I trust him as much as any other practical scenario, other than handing the reign over to Zoom.
No move necessary.

Regardless of if I trust him or not, i'm going to look back at his last two seasons stats and say that we could do much worse at the position.

Jones was excellent in the second half after a rough couple months coming back from an injury. He's not dominating but he gets the job done much more often than not. He was good enough last year that I would let him finish out his contract this year in that role and give it to Zoom in two years assuming that Jones stays solid next season.

Jones should not be replaced until his contract expires.

So you want to trade Zumaya and get rid of Jones?
With Walker leaving for free agency that would mean that they would have to scrounge up 3 relievers in the offseason.

I trust Jones as much as any other closer in MLB, in other words I will be terrified any time they go for a save.

Sure I trust Jones. Why not?

I would definately be open to signing Eric Gange to a deal. Now that he is a free agent, he would be amazing here. I have a feeling he will be healthy next season. We could pull something like the Yankees pulled with Dotel. It may be worth it.
Hopefully Jones can do as good as he did this year, next year. He sure makes me nervous, but he got the job done.

There will be a lot of teams going for him, and I doubt he would want to be one of 2/3 set-up men when he could close for some other team like Cleveland or Boston or Atlanta. Don't get me wrong, I think he'd be great here, but I don't think it's going to be feasible because he's going to be in too high of demand in a very weak market.

Comming off an injury, I doubt any team will want him to close. Not until he proves himself. i dont think he'll get closer money. I dont expect his demand to be too high.

I think his demand will be high, but only due to the lack of depth in the market. But I agree that the Tigers should make a play for him.

Yeah, let's try for Gagne. After all, the Percival signing worked out great.

I'm not saying they should sign him to be the closer, just to improve the depth in the ben by taking Grilli's/Miner's spot. He would just be another flamethrower to use in the 6/7th inning.

I would love to sit down with Kerry Wood, and just be like .. are you ready to become a possible dominate closer, because if you are -- GREAT!

After enduring Juan Acevedo, Matt Anderson, Chris Mears, Ugueth Urbina (who truly was a fireman), Troy Percival and Fernando Rodney for the past several years, we finally get a solid steady season out of a closer - with rough interlude of a few weeks early in the season - and yet we have more kill-the-closer threads than in any season in memory.
You explain it to me.

That's all right 1MF, I remember all the fire DD and Illich threads last off season. This year we are happy they are staying on, but we have to have someone to kill or fire, so I guess TJ has been elected. :cheeky:

I'll try. It's because the line between how he pitched during the "rough interlude" and how he pitched the rest of the time was not that broad. He gets by on subtle degrees of stuff, variety of pitches, keeping the hitter off balance just enough. It only takes a minor step back for him to be very, very hittable.
Still, I think he's pretty good at walking that fine line and he may have another decent year in him. I'm okay with him going into 2007 as the closer. I'm ready to rethink that as soon as he hits another rough interlude, mainly based on his age, career numbers and potentially better options. Interludes can stretch into retirement when you get enough miles on an arm. Until then, Viva TJ!

Its amazing the career that Todd Jones has carved for himself. He is pretty much the same pitcher now that he was when he started in the league yet it is 14 years later and he is still in the league. Must be something to his success.

I trust him against any team except the White Sox, Yankees, Mets or Cardinals.
It is refreshing when he comes in to know that if someone beats us, they are going to have to earn it because Todd Jones throws strikes more than any pitcher I've seen.

The arguments against Jones are always "if" statements. If only he was just a little worse, it would be horrible! If only he pitched more than one inning more often. If only that fly ball had been hit in a different stadium. If he keeps this up . . .
Take away the ifs, and you've got yourself a pretty good closer.

Barring injury or long term ineffectiveness TJ will be the closer most of next year. It certainly would take more than 2 blown saves.

Does anyone remember the late-spring threads in which people said that Leyland had better make Zumaya the closer for the playoffs?
