Official countdown to opening day thread [Archive]

we have the transaction thread and the historical Tigers threads back up. The only thing missing to officially make this the off season is the countdown thread that Keglerv so faithfully kept going last off season. I waited several days to see if he would start it again this year, but so far he hasn't (I still think of it as his baby). I will start it, and if Keglerv wants to take it over, he is welcome to, otherwise I will keep it going. I will add spring training as soon as we get a date on that.

No it is all yours this year Wendy, although I am back to being here almost every day, I can't say for sure that things won't be a little hectic where I might disappear for a few days at a time. I am just glad that I am remembered.

With the promise of a good team and hope of a world championship, I will be really drooling as the off season draws to a close. Last year we were all excited about following what we expected to be a "maybe .500 team" this year's "package" under the 2007 "baseball tree" is even bigger with more glitter. How on earth are we going to be able to stand the wait?

I like watching these numbers go down. :happy:

Anybody know when the date pitches and catchers report is? I know it's usually around the middle of Febuary which would put that around 100 days away. Yipee!
As soon as someone hears a date, I will add that and our off season will start looking really short. :cool:

Aside from the first spring game, I am looking forward to Yoda's first game thread. It sure would be nice if they had gameday play-by-play for spring training. I hate trying to sustain my addiction on the basis of a linescore alone...
I know what you mean, but at least that is better than nothing. Hey, the ballpark has wifi, maybe a few of us that go for spring training with laptops (or locals with laptops) can take turns doing some play by play--or at least part of the game until our batteries give out. I will want to spend most of the time getting pics, but will be happy to do some at least at one game. You know fill in what is happening every inning or two. Maybe once we get tickets for games and schedules figured out, everyone can sign up for a game or two (or during heavy traffic at ballparks) we can sign up for a few innings. Maybe I will make a suggestion on the spring training thread and see how much feedback we get from that.

If we go by last year, as soon as each of them has opened up 25 Little Caesar's Pizzarias and have served their 400 hours holding up a flourescent orange sign at the roadside or February 15th, whichever comes first.

and so far only two teams have reported in--the Indians and the Phillies who have their reporting dates and Feb 14 and 15. Shall we choose one and use that until we get something official?

It is unofficial, but it is the 15th.

There was some talk of the 14th, but apparently Leyland is a ladies man and plans on breaking out the Courvoisier cognac and his scented candles for Valentine's Day.
Nice try, but if the fifteenth is reporting day, that means those who have not arrived yet, will be arriving on the 14th :laugh:. Note my edited post (#13).

Has a date for Tigerfest been set? I bought a few of my favorite Tigers games from this season from MLB.com, but this has not settled my thirst for baseball.

Mr Malefic-- winter ball is going on in Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Mexico. I follow those to get my baseball fix. to get the equivalent of gameday in MLB in Venezuela, go to www.eluniveral.com and scroll down to the listing of the games. IF they are in progress (most evenings), choose one and click on "inning y inning". It is all in Spanish, but it will give you a challenge, and most people here know enough about baseball, that you will be able to figure out what is going on even if you do not speak Spanish. Some of our Tigers and Tiglets are on the Caribes

Last year, Keglerv had a countdown thread going, but he started it on the last day of the regular season. I found myself going to it almost everyday. Usually days would go by with no comment other than the countdown, but as the last month came around, more and more comments like people hearing the crowds and smelling the hotdogs....and the excitement mounted. As others were missing baseball and tensions mounted, the countdown thread was one of the few threads where no fighting was occuring--almost a refuge where Keglerv was just quietly counting down the days until baseball started again. It helped calm my nerves at times.

Considering how bad my Timberwolves will be doing, I am really counting the days for spring training. I can't get into regular season hockey and college basketball for both men's and women's in the regular season does not really get me going.

WOW!!! Three months from today, Valentines Day, is my travel day. 1,126 miles of I-75 and I-4 and with a few hours sleep and I'll be at Tigertown bright and early the 15th. Hope to see and meet you all there. I never change my clocks in October so I have an excuse not to return north until they are again correct with April's time change.

Well, it would be disappointing to show up for opening day, shovel off our seats, and have no Tigers show up. I have a feeling, contrary to some former poster's thoughts, that no Detroit Tigers follow this board/thread. They would not know they were supposed to be playing a game.

sounds like a good plan. Of course it could be kind of a tease for all of us too--you know, like dangling a gift before a small child on the day before Christmas. But then, as soon as you start flashing those pictures, we will all be like most kids drooling in front of their pile of gifts under the tree for several days before the day arrives. Anyway, hope everyone had a nice Thanksgiving and managed to survive black Friday. (haven't yet heard of any tramplings yet)

Last I knew Detroit had not released their schedule yet, so we have been going by other team's schedules. I need to check that site again, but last I knew, there was some question as to when the Florida Southern game was to take place (It looked like another team had the day before spring training games started).

Well, I still have one bright spot to look forward to. Whitecaps have their winter banquet on January 17. Jim Leyland and Whitecaps new manager, Tom Brookens, will be the keynote speakers. Not sure yet what other Tigers/Whitecaps will show up, but I am really looking forward to the evening. After that it will be almost a months wait until Roger's camera will brighten our days.
In the mean time, yes, there is baseball. I wander over to Venezuela once in a while to get a fix, but I am still flying high on the Whitecaps and Tigers magical seasons. Somehow, this year, Venezuelan winter ball hasn't had the draw it has had in the last few seasons. INstead I find myself hanging out at the faucet of Motown sports waiting for the occasional drip of Tigers news to quench my thirst. (hows that for poetic)

I can understand where he is coming from. We are only a few days before January and a month later all kinds of ballplayers start rolling into Lakeland. If I lived in Lakeland, I would probably be finding excuses to wander by the ballpark on every day that was not raining--just to catch a glimpse of a promise of future baseball.

Eh... its nice and all but the players tend to look the same each day. Seeing them once is enough for me. I like watching BP and pitching/fielding drills but once I've seen a few day's worth I'm ready for the games to begin.

He didn't appear tipsy at all during the evening. He appeared clearheaded as he visited with many many fans. He was just having a great time. He had commented at one point in the evening how excited he was to be able to come back to WM. I suppose it was also fun for him to come back where he got his start as a professional--a kid who had promise to become something, knowing that he was on the brink of having that hope fulfilled. He was full of confidence even in January. I remember him commenting to me and the others at the table that he was going to make it as hard as he could for the Tigers to not take him north with them. Wow, how far that young man has come from the hopes of being taken north at the end of spring training, huh?

Not sure who I want this year. I tend to try for someone who will be at WM so updates on my AAT will be easy. Needless to say, if Cameron Maybin fell to me, I would probably grab him up in a moment. But, I think I will probably try for someone who is going to be in WM, and someone who has the best promise of allowing me good reporting. With Rogers help last season, I enjoyed having Kevin as my Tiglet. Unfortunately, in the heat of the WM season, I fell off from keeping up faithful reports on him as I intended to. This is one reason I would like to have a Whitecap as my AAT. Reports with pics of a guy in my favorite summer hangout are my goal. I will have to see. I will probably change my avatar, but do not know yet who I will have in Zoom's place. My reason for having him the last year was, to get him on the Tigers and to wish him a good season. Who do we want to accomplish that for this year? Clevlen? Tata? someone else??

As hard as I tried yesterday, no I could not touch that performance. You guys should try to recall how many times I posted the first week I was on this thread, then you would realize that this weekend pales in comparison !!

My primary defense - there isn't a damned thing to do in Northern Michigan in January without any snow! Other than go to the bar or the casino, and both of those propositions sound like losers to me. :wink:

I cannot handle this countdown...it's too long to wait. I am blowing my budget and have changed my official departure date from Feb. 14th to Jan. 25th...that way I can catch some of Florida Southern and the fantasy camps' games. I just count differently than you do. When I count down. Day zero is the day of the event. I don't want to wake up on Day zero and still have thirty six hours before the event occurs, so I do count the day of when I count down. :classic:

Excuse #1 I am trying to rush winter along, but then, I don't want to have to shovel my seat at the ballpark only to not have the team show up. So I guess that excuse is out the window

18 days is 18 days too far away. I am ready now. Of course I am working for porbably the next 3 Saturdays. I amy have to call in sick on the first day they start showing up. Hope its a Thursday. I hate that day.
I would imagine guys will start straggling in anytime soon. The fifteenth is a Thursday. Don't know what kind of a schedule they usually have, but probably team meeting first thing and then some workouts on the fields. Your hubby probably knows about what time to start looking for them. It is during this time of year and during IL, I have to admit to being jealous of those of you living in Florida. (but not during hurricane season)

For any of you team moms or other host parents, do you keep in touch with your boys over the off-season? I wonder if they have shared their conceptions about this ST? Do they think they know where they are going to play in 2007 and in what role?

What's a little hurricane got to do with baseball? Baseball is played between the drops!!! 3 in 6 weeks a few years ago didn't stop much. The summer rains are worse than hurricanes any day.

I guess you can tell we haven't been hit by a hurricane in the 36 years we have been here. We watched the 3 in 2005 come right by us with little dammage to us but we had several houses within a 1000 feet of us have lots of dammages. One had 2 trees come thru the roof within 10 minutes of each other. I think we had about 10 out of 100 homes get trees thru the roofs. Ours just the the edge of the house going down along the side of the house.

I am looking forward to seeing all these guys. (only 40 days--Yay) I appreciate you keeping us up to date with the most recent "look" of each. I look at the pics of guys whose face I knew so well the year they were in WM, and worry that I won't recognize them when I see them. Matt Righter looks like he has lost the "boyish" look. Will I recognize him? I just remember John Birtwell having to tell me who he was two years ago.
