I found this on the net, searching for a picture of Joel for a project I am working on. Talk about wishful thinking, but .. it's flattering, I guess.
:knocked:
I think of all the young players we have, including Verlander/Bonderman, he's the player that has gained the most national buzz .. from the playoff run.
That is funny!
And I agree. Most baseball fans know who Zumaya is at this point.

Boston, you can have Zoom...as long as you hand over Papi, Papelbon, Manny, and Youkalis. Oh, and you might have to pick up some of Manny's salary to get it done.
And yes, it is fun that other teams would actually want our players on their team now. I guess that's what happens when you're good.

I was talking to a Yankees fan right after we beat them.
"Yeah, we'll have Zoom soon enough."

This is the main reason why the Yankees have had problems in the playoffs since 2002. Their 1995-2001 run was made up of guys they developed in their system. Guys who played together for many years.
Now they just buy their team, which fills the room full of egos, and makes it tough to come together and get through the hard times when it counts.
A lot of our guys played together in the minors, went through 2003 as a group, put up some ok seasons in 2004 and 2005, and went to the World Series in 2006.

The money they have spent on hitters has worked out just fine. Its just that spending money on free agent pitchers is risky business. Typically pitchers are around 30-32 when they become free agents. If their original team has put a ton of workload on them than they have a good chance of being injured at some point during the long deals.
The Yankees have too much of the Pavano/Wright type of pitcher and not enough of the Wang type.

Could be... but assuming that the Tigers are unable to ever sign him to an extension or that he is so injured by the time he becomes a free agent they don't want to re-sign him it will be at least another 5 years before Zumaya hits free agency.
I hope thats what he means by soon enough....

I am hoping that with the Tigers beginning to show themselves to be a championship team, guys will want to stay with or come to our team rather than leave us for the Yankees.

Well, I'd settle for Papelbon, but I guess your free to dream. Papelbon - better reliever, Papelbon going to be a starter next year.

Exactly. Steinbrenner epitomizes the "I want it..and I want it now" attitude. The rumors of Torre being fired were laughable. I actually would not have minded to see him gone, so then Steinbrenner could see what an idiot he is. Cashman probably talked some sense into him.
He keeps adding these big free agents year after year, but in my opinion, it is just holding them back. You add to your team with free agents and trades, you don't compile 90% of your team this way. Chemistry is very underrated in sports because it is intangible. I think the current Tigers team is a bit of an exception. The players they had in place in years past, many were either not major league talent (Matt Roney, Hal Morris, among several others) or not everyday players (Omar Infante, Ramon Santiago). We still dealt players that we brought up from the minors to get players we have now (Bonderman, Guillen).
Really though, it comes down to pitching. I am going off on a bit of a tangent here, but it still is related to the original topic. RJ came off a great year and got a big contract, but that was not a great idea considering how old he was and that he has been a strikeout pitcher throughout his career with that fastball and slider and now his pitch speed isn't there and he hasn't adjusted accordingly.
Also, poster JonBenke, I have heard Atlanta is not a great sports city. Many people who live there, their roots are not in the Atlanta area and their allegiances are to other sports teams. What's your take on that?

You heard correct. Atlanta is by far the worst sports city in America, not only because they couldn't sell out an NL playoff game a few years back, or that they stop going to Falcons games as soon as they lose a few games or as soon as Vick gets hurt, it's just that Atlanta people are just not big on sports.
My friend is from GA, born and raised .. and the reason why we're friends, is because he is -- while from Atlanta -- is a huge Michigan football fan.
You get allot of that down here.
