View Full Version : ESPN doesn't think Inge is top 3 candidate for AL GG

They have a poll to vote for gold glove by league and position. Inge is not even one of the three!!!
Does Inge have a chance to win the official gold glove???
In my opinion he deserves it, but it's turned into a bs award over the years.

No. Most of the baseball world thinks Inge is the worst 3rd baseman in the history of the game since the only time they've seen the Tigers play is during the World Series.

If his batting average were higher he'd be a candidate.
WHen do they start announcing the awards?

I agree with Sparks - the lasting image will be his misplays in the World Series. It may not be fair, but that will sway an ESPN poll like this and no one would vote for him anyway.

He certainly didn't make any case for himself in the world series.

ESPN also thinks Ken Griffey is a better player than Lou Gehrig.

What's wrong with that?

Ken Griffey better than Lou Gehrig? My answer to you is the same one Louie Armstrong gave about jazz:
"If you have to ask, I can't explain it to you."

Lou Gehrig is better because he didn't wear an earring and was played by Gary Cooper.

"If you have to ask, I can't explain it to you."
Because Lou is from the old times?
The facts are this:
Griffey Jr. : .291/.374/.557 2412 hits 563 homeruns 1 MVP 10 gold gloves while playing centerfield.
Gehrig : .340/.447/.632 2721 hits 493 homeruns 2 MVPs (played before they did gold gloves) while playing first base.
I think Gehrig is the better overall hitter. And was a better power hitter if you look at ISO with a 292 for Gehrig and a 266 for Griffey.
Where Griffey could win out is the fact that he played Centerfield amazingly well for 10 years and is still decent out there at this point.
I am not sure who I would say is better but it certainly isn't as questionable as you make it out to be.

this year the tigers didn't get the national media attention in the begining and people look at errors in determining defense. inge racked up a few errors early in the season and that is what did him in.

I'd probably still go with Gehrig but you could make an argument for Griffey because of his speed and defense. It's not an absurd notion at all.

Inge should be a gold glove candidate. ESPN and its followers have no clue about these things. Did you see who they picked for best shortstop? Now that's funny.

to be all honest, I think he should probably be top 3 for al, but no way does he deserve to win

Orlando Cabrera (LAA) or Alex Gonzalez (Bos) right? Oh they chose Jeter....
Jeter is a great hitter... but is REALLY overrated as a defender. I can't believe he has even one gold glove.

The problem is that there are 4 very good third basemen in the AL who can all make a strong case.
Chavez, Lowell, Crede, and Inge.
From what I saw personally I thought Chavez looked horrible due to his injuries, but he still hads the stats, Lowell's range doesn't impress me but he hardly ever commits an error, Crede is like a halfway between of Inge and Lowell...good range but not as good as Inge's, but he commits about half as many errors.
Really I could see any of them winning it, but due to the fact he had the worst offensive year of the four I imagine Inge has no chance.

Chavez is going to get it. The award itself has a lot to do with reputation.

Again, it must be reiterated that great range does not equate to great defense. Sure Inge gets to some plays that many other 3B could not. but his hands are a bit on the "hard" side, and his throwing accuracy could use some improvement.

Lou Gehrig is better because he didn't wear an earring and was played by Gary Cooper.
Perhaps -- just maybe -- do you think that Gehrig's .340 lifetime batting average and ungodly amount of RBI per game might have factored into my decision?
Nah, couldn't be that. It must be the Gary Cooper effect. After all, we all know I value intangibles over actual performance.
Now, if Cuba Gooding ever stars in "Pride of the Mariners," I might just have to change my mind. As long as he doesn't wear an earring.

Don't leave Beltre off the list. He looked pretty good in the field once again this year. I saw many of his games and he is impressive.

Yes, and when he throws a ball away or botches an easy one it counts as an error. I don't think anyone is saying range is the only part of the equation, merely that errors are even less useful.

The AL has about 5 or 6 legitimate candidates for GG at 3B, not 3.

I bet Rogers and Pudge get gold gloves for the Tigers this year. Chavez will get the 3B gold glove I bet even if his offense sucked this year. They are announcing the winners in 1/2 hour!

if I may ask....
what does offense have to do with being a gold glove candidate? So Inge didnt have the offensive numbers that his counterparts had.....big deal. That doesnt mean his defense is worse.
