I was listening to 1270 on my way to Lansing today and they had a brief conversation saying that Tiger apperal with the Tiger logo is now No. 2 among all of MLB. Surprisingly the Yankees were not No. 1. The Mets are.
Of course our recent climb to the World Series had a lot to do with this. They had some incredible precentage jumps just in the last month to even last week alone. Supposedly there is even a shortage of merchandise right now because of the Tigers' climb.
They sited where they found the info, but I can't recall where it was. However, I thought some may find this interesting. You'd have to think that with the Olde English D in the World Series, it should be No. soon.
The fact that the Mets are #1 is more surprising. I have a hard time believing that. THe Yankee logo is everywhere.

It might have a lot to do with rappers wearing the D too.

The METS...it does not make sense.
I would have thought the Yankees for sure...maybe even Boston to some degree...but the METS.
Interesting to say the least.

The Tigers have blown past the New York Yankees in merchandise sales, moving up to the No. 2 spot behind the Mets, said Howard Smith, senior vice president of licensing for Major League Baseball.

The Yankees do very little beyond classic marketing of their logos. The Mets have like 250 game jerseys alone. This is still surprising, as I would have guessed this order:
1. Yankees
2. Cubs
3. Braves
4. Red Sox
5. Whitesox
Great for the Tigers. I got a Fan shop magazine yesterday and for the first time there were more options than just the hats.
I think a major impact on this is the edict that the Old D must be displayed at all times while on the field (its partially the reason they went with the undershirts this year). I heard that on a telecast and I loved it.

I wonder if this is driven by a temporary upsurge in Detroit area sales or if it's a nationwide thing?

I contributed to it, buying a world series patch home cap on mlb.com
i bet WS teams are always top 2 or 3 for the time during the world series

What's the timespan used for these rankings? The last week?

Sparks,
On the radio they were going back as far as the last six months.

I flew to New Orleans this weekend and noticed lots of Tigers hats out and about in the airport and metro. Lots of Tigers fans are coming out of the woodwork and showing their pride. :)

It makes sense if you consider that they are probably measuring sales only within a very recent timeframe -- probably within the last seven days. If they were reporting on sales for the entire year, or even for the last 30 days, I think you wouldn't see that same ranking.
