View Full Version : What's up with Rodney?

The guy came out and hit 98 and I thought the gun must have been off. Then he proceeded to hit 99 and 100. I don't remember seeing the gun off when Nate was pitching, nor was it off when Zumaya was pitching. So what got into Rodney? Has anyone figured this out? Was he really throwing that hard?

The gun seemed to be off by about 2-3 mph. It had Nate hitting 93-94 consistently and he also hit 96. Zumaya hit 103 two straight times against Bradley, one of which he pulled foul. Plus Rodney threw a "90 mph" changeup.

The gun was amped by a few MPH's.

It didn't look like he threw that hard. I mean Zoom came in and you could see the differance.

It also had Jonesy at 95 and Robertson at 96 at one point. I think it was off by 2-3 mph.

I don't think I've ever seen Rodney hit 100

They've both been hitting that lately though.

Even if it was off 2 that means Rodney hit 98. That's impressive for him. Now if only he could locate it...

The guns are usually fast in the playoffs to amp up the TV audience. But I agree it was impressive.

I know he can hit 97. I didn't know if he could actually hit 100... He hadn't pitched in a long while so he was probably fresh.

103 seems a bit crazy for Zumaya. It tells he he throws harder than any other pitcher but at the same time I am not sure that I have ever seen that high of a reading consistently...

Fox seems to be doing their best to turn Zumaya into a superstar. I love it. Did you see that really slow motion shot of his pitching motion? Unbelievable.

In the other thread it said that the TV gun was 3mph faster than the stadium gun. Rodney was still throwing hard - 97 ain't too shabby.

I remember that Rodney (Pre-TJ) was able to trow 97-99 on occasion. Maybe he dialed it back to gain more control and movement (wasn't that a Cluck-ism?)

The gun in Oakland was reading pitches too fast all night, or does Robertson really throw 95 MPH pitches?

He brings it up to 94 so it wouldn't be out of line to see him hit 95.

I didn't realize Robertson does bring some heat - thanks Yoda.

My brother-in-law, who has recently played minor league ball, swears that the Fox gun is always 4-5 MPH fast.

Btw, this gives me an opportunity to vent about the World Baseball Classic. If you recall, Rodney was lights out in that and then continued his fine pitchingin the early part of the season, but I am guessing that by August he was pretty much burned out. We don't need the World Baseball Classic, especially if it harms our pitchers late in the season.

On a side note: Do you think 10 years from now we'll be seeing guys throwing over 105 mph semi-regularly? I seemed to me that back when Anderson was big news that 99 mph was considered fantastic. When he hit triple digits it was unbelievable. Since then, we've had three Tigers hit triple digits regularly (Farnsworth, Verlander, Zumaya), and if last night is to be believed, a fourth in Rodney.

I believe that there are others around the league who do it as well... granted not as often and consitantly as Zumaya, but still hitting 100.

Joe Morgan just called and said Rodney didn't hit 100MPH. It was really 99MPH. Joe can tell this with his special powers.

I'll believe the stadium gun way before I believe the Fox gun. The Fox gun was apparently 2-3 mph higher than the Mcaffe Stadium gun... unless it had a virus?

Yeah, I know. I'll be here all night folks... and remember, the 8 o'clock show is completely different than the 6 o'clock show....

Yeah, he is good. I believe he goes by the sound the ball makes when it hits the catchers glove.

While I think the guns are off somewhat, I think adrenaline in the playoffs is bound to raise velocity somewhat.

I don't see anyone throwing that. I think alot of techniques have been studied and analyzed allowing more pitchers to throw as hard as they can, while still being able to actually "pitch". As for the Tigers, remember DD loves power pitchers. That is the biggest reason why we are seeing this more often in this town.

The radar gun at the Coliseum had Rodney's fastball at 97 in the first inning he pitched. I thought even that was a little harder than he really throws, but it could have been accurate. In his second inning, he topped out at 94. The fastest I saw from Robertson was 92, so there was clearly a difference between the stadium and Fox radar guns.

Robertson wasn't throwing any 95/96 mph fastball's, I knew the gun was off with these readings. The network guns all seem to be miscalibrated badly.
