View Full Version : I want to do a Detroit themed radio show
The G Man

I'm on the air this Friday night and would like to dedicate a good chunk of my show to Detroit. So, keeping in mind that this is a rock'n'roll show I would like suggestions for music that I should play. I'm not thinking about the classic motown sound...more dirty stuff with loud guitars. Of course The White Stripes will be in there...The Detroit Cobras...some Kiss maybe.
What are your suggestions? Classic stuff is great but more current stuff will really be appreciated.
(I know that this may belong is a different forum but the reason I'm doing this is because of the Tigers so this is where I'm stickin' it.)
I appreciate your feedback.

Oh yeah...click on the link below to check out my myspace page. You can look at my past setlists but the link to last week's show isn't actually me because I was at Comerica that night.

Any White Stripes & Kid Rock since it's a more current R&R station. Test some Eminem, or I really like D12's Welcome to Detroit City, watch the cursing though!

David Bowie's "Panic in Detroit" is my favorite Detroit song.
[edit to add lyrics]
Panic In Detroit"
He looked a lot like Che Guevara,
drove a diesel van
Kept his gun in quiet seclusion,
such a humble man
The only survivor of the National People's Gang
Panic in Detroit, I asked for an autograph
He wanted to stay home, I wish someone would phone
Panic in Detroit
He laughed at accidental sirens that broke the evening
gloom
The police had warned of repercussions
They followed none too soon
A trickle of strangers were all that were left alive
Panic in Detroit, I asked for an autograph
He wanted to stay home, I wish someone would phone
Panic in Detroit
Putting on some clothes I made my way to school
And I found my teacher
crouching in his overalls
I screamed and ran to smash my favorite slot machine
And jumped the silent cars that slept at traffic lights
Having scored a trillion dollars,
made a run back home
Found him slumped across the table.
A gun and me alone
I ran to the window. Looked for a plane or two
Panic in Detroit.
He'd left me an autograph
"Let me collect dust."
I wish someone would phone
Panic in Detroit

that one always troubled me. while there was an "East Detroit" at the time the song came out, there was no "South Detroit." there really isn't much of a South Detroit. Southwest Detroit, maybe. or Downriver. or Canada. Maybe he meant Delray? at the time, i'm sure there were more residents than the hundreds hearty folks who still inhabit the place.

He works at GM, and he is stealing a piece at a time, and making a car at home.

Gotta include more than 'Celebrate' from Rare Earth, 'Get Ready' is IMO the best rendition out there---live version about 20 minutes long though. btw, Got the new Seger CD and I really like it! Grand Funk's 'Foot Stompin' Music' is excellent. And Alice Cooper of course.
You should also ( if you can find it) some intro's or tapes of Arthur Penhollow or even WABX stuff if you can find it, some clips of Ernie Harwell, even the old Tiger theme song for the radio coverage that always introduced the game when Ernie did them.

At least I have another week to get it together.

I did my Detroit show last night.
Check out the setlists at my myspace page by clicking on the link below.
The start of the second hour features half an hour of live music from Detroit and there's Detroit artists throughout. Keep in mind that I have quotas to meet for new and Canadian music so I could only do so much.
Anyway, like I said, check out the setlist and listen if you like.

Wish I had seen this thread sooner! I would have voted for:
Bob Seger - Ramblin Gamblin Man
Ted Nugent - Cat Stratch Fever
Kiss - Detroit Rock City
Survivor - Eye of The Tiger
Slim, I love that Johnny Cash song too "One Piece at a Time". That does apply well to the current age span of the Tiger roster!
