~~~~~
Pyro's Silver Sluggers: Carlos Guillen, Marcus Thames
Pyro's Gold Glovers: Pudge Rodriguez, Placido Polanco, Brandon Inge, Curtis Granderson
Pyro's Relief Pitcher of the Year: Joel Zumaya
Pyro's Cy Young: Kenny Rogers
Pyro's MVP: Carlos Guillen
Assorted Thoughts:
1. The pitching as a whole was awesome
2. Our bullpen could be so good if they stopped walking people
3. Todd Jones really ended up having an incredible year
4. Craig Monroe is basically Brandon Inge...only playing below average defense at a less important position...good thing he's "clutch"
5. Despite all his detractors Jeremy Bonderman had a very good year, and perhaps throwing 214 innings is why he struggled late in the year? Nah, it must be because he lacks mental toughness.
6. Carlos Guillen is really good at baseball.
7. Between AAA and limited MLB, I bet Chad Durbin earned a job somewheres
8. Andrew Miller needs the minor leagues
9. Although it's not in my stats, Brent Clevlen struck out 15 times in 39 at bats, have fun back in AA next year Brent
10. I don't care that he had a big slump, Granderson was great for someone who was essentially a rookie.
11. Our First Base Position was awful from May onward, and DH wasn't very good either.
12. I was shocked to find Pudge Rodriguez had the second fewest strikeouts out of our 9 regulars (Polanco 1st).
And finally, regardless of the late season struggles, regardless of what happens in the playoffs:
This was an incredible year, and I want to give my deepest thanks to everyone on the list above for doing their best to make it happen!
(All stats are from Detroittigers.com)
Anyways, I had nothing else to do tonight except stew over the loss and collapse, so I decided to put this together, I'm sorry for the formatting but I didn't really know how to make that look better.
Feel free to share your thoughts and opinions on this season.
.320/.400/.519 for a .919 OPS
That is all.
thank you for using your frustration and disappointment for a contructive use. It benefitted the rest of us and reminded us of what a great season we have had in spite of a very disappointing end. kudos to you. These numbers say a lot. I knew I liked Guillen, but wow!
This was a hell of a regular season and went by way too fast. It was somethng that Tiger fans were looking forward to for quite a long time. Hopefully there will be many many more in the near future.
I wouldn't be too hurt to trade Guillen. His bonehead errors make me cringe....
If someone would have told me during Spring Training the Tigers would win the Wild Card I would have been thrilled! I never would have thought the Tigers would make the playoffs.
With that in mind, I refuse to get down on the team for losing their last 5 games. It's the 2nd season now, only 8 teams are left, and anything can happen. The 2002, 2003, and 2004 World Series Champions were Wild Card teams. The 2005 White Sox blew a huge lead and almost didn't make the playoffs, but ended up winning the World Series.
Yeah it would be really easy to replace by far the best bat they have in the lineup....
Just as easy as upgrading one of the best defensive third baseman on any hot corner ... yet that seems reasonable to so many folx.
I like Inge and it would be tough to replace his glove but Guillen's bat has a lot more value. Take Guillen out of the line-up this year and see how many runs they score. He was their MVP.
Elsewhere I already completed my Tigers report card, but I'll just review basic things I noted when writing that up:
* - Omar Infante was equal offensively to Ivan Rodriguez.
* - Neifi had a lower OPS than Carlos Zambrano.
* - Sean Casey is terrible.
* - Our pitching truly was amazing.
* - Carlos Guillen was the team MVP, and Joel Zumaya was second, in spite of being a reliever when we had great performances from starters.
* - Beyond Guillen and Granderson we had nobody that walked more than 44 times.
* - Going back to the amazing pitching, we really only had one pitcher that was bad all season long that stayed on the roster most of the season (Colon).
* - Wil Ledezma finally belongs in the major leagues.
* - People need to back off Fernando Rodney. He had a really good season (though a troubling home/away split). I spent all last off-season saying this and it appears I have to dig in to do it again this off-season since people don't seem to understand it. Especially if he gives up more than 1 base runner in any post-season game.
* - Marcus Thames had better offensive numbers than any Tigers outfielder in a fairly significant number of at-bats and yet played less than three other Tigers outfielders.
* - Craig Monroe must be demoted (to 4th OF) or replaced in the off-season (that's another one I spent all last season banging the drum about).
* - Vance Wilson had an admirable season given his role.
I can't argue that point. I merely think that both positions would be difficult to replace without sacrificing something. I also think there are fewer third base upgrades than shortstop upgrades. And if you found a shortstop upgrade, then you also immediately upgrade 1B -- with Carlos Guillen.
Thanks, I noticed some weird things with the Tigers stats page (i.e. when I went to the slugging percentage sortable it randomly changed everyones stats to two days ago)
Apparently they hadn't completely updated it last night.
