Anxious are we? You are right. We need a new thread for next season. But if it is like many of the Tigers game threads, it will be 20 pages long before spring training.
Mr.MelissaG915

Nothing wrong with that.
Let's start a topic. What should they improve at 5/3 Park? I would like to see better motorcycle parking.

They're hoping to add a little roof over the bullpen area for next season. I saw them taking measurements during the playoffs, and overheard discussions about it.

Well, I keep telling them I want an overhang to stretch down to my seat (protection for my camera y'know) and they keep telling me that they are going to put an over hang over just my seat and then tell me that doing that would obstruct the view of other fans. Oh well.

Maybe you can convince the team to let you sit down in the bullpen, with the new overhang they'll hopefully have next season! :cheeky:

Not as good of pictures there. At least not of the game--but would probably get some good antic pictures. I'll try for the dugout instead. :silly:

You want someone else from the forum to die? I'll add an orange one no problem, for a Tigers win against the Sox... but I'm not hoping to add any red ones anytime soon!

Sorry orange (with my vision they look the same, but I do see the difference now)

Since Mendez really didn't get a chance to see much action and was in the process of learning catching, he might be a possibility. It would be nice if we had Jeff Kunkel. I would love to have Matt OBrien, but that's not going to happen. I can't imagine having anyone else back next year, but you never know
Mr.MelissaG915

Last season I really thought that some of the guys who came late might be back, but only Luke French was. As good as this years team was, I doubt we will get many back. Fragoso and Hammond might be possibilities.

Wendy, be nice to my AAT Casper Wells. He's an outfielder with a nice arm and a power bat, strikes out too much and suffers from the "too old for the league" label. He didn't really distinguish himself at Oneonta so, if he gets a job next year, it's probably WM. I like underdogs / late bloomers.

You can count on me. Looking forward to meeting him. Wait, I might have met him. A young man was at the game we won the MWL championship. He wanted to say good bye to Matt OBrien and I tried to get Matt's attention. He was one of the members of the Oneonta Tigers and I never did understand what he said his name was (it was really noisy that night). He might have been the guy. Nice young man. We will do our best to help your AAT succeed.

I'm wondering if Orlando Perdomo might start out the season in West Michigan, because of how he wound up missing a good chunk of time at the end of the season, with his injured elbow.
If the elbow is ok, he's planning on playing some winter ball back home in Venezula, so maybe a strong performance there and in the spring will help keep that from happening.

Since it is currently the off-season for West Michigan, I thought renaming the thread as such would be more appropriate. This is a good place to discuss anything WM Whitecaps related between now and opening day of 2007.
A new season diary should be started just prior to the 2007 season.

Mendez wont be back
Why not? He may be back and as a starter, playing everyday....will all depend on how his ST goes, trades, releases, quits, promotions, etc.....they have re-placed guys on the last day of ST and couple years ago, called guys on the road & told them to go to another level.....nothing wrong with repeating....Rableo repeated @ WM a second year & he was called up to the Tigers Sat.PM.....think Tigers are learning to not rush the guys..., afterall, we did have Cameron here all year!

Oh, no worries. My lips are sealed on almost all of the "inside knowledge" I picked up over the season. The one thing I did mention was something that I only heard through the rumor mill, I've got no way to verify it.
This morning I got an e-mail from Michael Holliman's mom, about the CD of pictures I made for Michael. She said he got home yesterday, and was really excited to show the family the pictures. Even though I didn't make those CD's as a way to get attention, it was really nice to get the little thank you note from a family member.

More Post-Season Honors for Whitecaps
September 27th, 2006
COMSTOCK PARK, MI — The West Michigan Whitecaps season is over, but the awards continue to roll in for the newly-crowned Midwest League champs. Manager Matt Walbeck and outfielder Cameron Maybin were named to Baseball America’s Low Class A All-Star Team Tuesday evening.
Walbeck picked up his [U]second Manager of the Year award after leading the Whitecaps to two league titles in three years. He was also named Manager of the Year by the Midwest League and was named the Best Managerial Prospect by Baseball America during the season.
Maybin, the Detroit Tigers number one draft pick in 2005, joined his second post-season all-star team after playing his first professional season of baseball. He was also named to the Midwest League’s post-season all-star team. He hit .304 with 20 doubles, six triples and nine home runs with the Whitecaps this season despite missing a month due to injury.

I went after work and again after Bible Study. It was fun. People playing and sitting on the field watching the game, and others sitting inside and outside the Stadium Club enjoying the game and visiting. It went over well enough that they have decided to do this (starting at 1pm each day) every day that the Tigers play baseball this fall. Show up, it was fun. Bring a glove and baseball. Catch on the field is one of the open activities--and I need someone to play catch with

Lakeland said they would have the playoffs on their scoreboard big screen and the public would be invited. Nothing in the paper and nothing on their website. We had the funeral of the slain deputy and his dog today which really split the town in half for several hours with the huge traffic snarl created by 4-6000 people leaving the Church NW of the stadium and transitioning to the next town East. You just did not venture downtown tonight unless you had to. On a side note that was the only humorus item in the funeral today which was televised locally, our Sheriff told the congregation that he had incorrectly pronounced the officers K-9 dog's name several times in national interviews. Using several versions of "DEE-O GEE, and seeing it spelled many ways such as DIOGY), it turns out that the correct pronunciation was "D-O-G"..not Dog, the individual letters...D-O-G.

I am so glad Becky and I came out to the park to watch the game! We had a blast! It was great to hang out with "the gang" to watch some baseball again, it's something I've really missed.
Tonight's win is something that'll always stick in my memory, not just because of Maggs' walk-off job, but because of where I was when it happened. Becky and I were sitting in the Whitecap dugout watching the last inning (and YES, we were watching the game- there was a little boy who was hanging around us, so we were actually watching the game), and right when Maggs hit the ball, we both jumped up, and ran out onto the infield, yelling our fool heads off, because we immediately knew it was the game winning shot.

I will be there. Be aware that Saturday is in the suites instead of Pepsi Stadium. (they had rented out the stadium club previously), but the rest of the series will be in the stadium club. I only expect to miss Tuesday's game and Saturday the 28th. Are we going to try to call for a suite to be the Motown suite? I plan to get there at five, and it is first come first serve on the seats.

I may have spoken too soon. I found out two minutes after posting this, that my dad had a mini stroke this morning and is in the hospital. No problem. I have enjoyed every minute. Good news on my dad. He came home from the hospital about 6pm, and has been able to walk with a lot of assistance. It turns out his carotid artery is 50-60% blocked, but it would be dangerous to try to deal with that so that will remain untreated. He has not yet slept since yesterday morning, so am hoping that now that he is back in familiar surroundings, he will be able to get his sleep and get strength back. Thank you all for all your prayers and thoughts. It looks like I will be able to teach my Sunday School class this Sunday. And watch the Tigers game from the suites of 5/3 ballpark.

Brookens expected to lead 'Caps
Tom Brookens, a member of the 1984 World Series champion Detroit Tigers, is expected to be named the new field manager of the West Michigan Whitecaps next week, The Press has learned.
The franchise has scheduled an 11:30 a.m. Monday news conference at Fifth Third Ballpark to introduce their new skipper.
Earlier this summer, Brookens, who has guided the short-season Class A affiliate in Oneonta, N.Y., for the past two seasons, told The Press he'd be interested in managing the Whitecaps if the job opened up.
Matt Walbeck, who led West Michigan to the 2006 Midwest League championship, also is expected to be promoted by the Tigers to their Double-A affiliate in Erie, Pa., paving the way for Brookens to join the Whitecaps.

Been doing a lot of thinking since baseball is off the airways. Why not M&M (Maybin and Miller) with the big club in 2007. I remember a high school wunderkind out of Baltimore (he never played a day in the minors...Maybin has played some) and he now rests among the mighty in Cooperstown. Al Kaline is the name. And Miller certainly has the poise and the tools to pitch out of the bullpen...leading to an occasional start in 2007. Leyland wants the best on the AL CHAMPS...He would certainly have them.

Tom Brookens Takes the Helm; Whitecaps Seek Fifth Title Under New Staff
November 6th, 2006
COMSTOCK PARK, MI — In 2006 the West Michigan Whitecaps claimed the team’s fourth Midwest League title and the Detroit Tigers won the American League pennant for the first time since 1984. Now the championship tradition continues as Tom Brookens has been named manager of the Whitecaps. Brookens was a member of the Tigers 1984 world championship team and brings his baseball expertise and winning mentality to West Michigan. Joining Brookens on the staff are pitching coach Ray Burris and hitting coach Benny Distefano.
Brookens comes to West Michigan after managing the Oneonta Tigers for two seasons in the short-season New York-Penn League. In his first season, he led the Tigers to a 48-27 record and a Stedler Division championship. Last season he guided the O-Tigers to a 40-34 record and a second place finish in the division. Brookens is best known to Tigers fans as the gritty third baseman on the Tigers 1984 World Series Championship team. He played 12 seasons at the major league level with the Tigers (1979-88), New York Yankees (1989) and Cleveland Indians (1990). He finished his career with a .246 batting average, 71 home runs and 431 RBI in 1,336 games. Brookens served as an interim coach for the Whitecaps from April 27 to June 5 during the 2006 season.
Burris served as the pitching coach for Oneonta in 2006 in his first season with the Tigers organization. Burris played 15 years at the major league level with seven different clubs. Prior to joining the Tigers, Burris served as the roving pitching instructor for the St. Louis Cardinals. He held several positions with Milwaukee Brewers and Texas Rangers organizations as a coach and in the front office.
Distefano begins his second season in the Tigers organization and his first as the Whitecaps hitting coach. He is a veteran of five seasons in the major leagues and played for the Pittsburgh Pirates (1984, 86, 88-89) and Houston Astros (1992). Distefano served as a coach for the Gulf Coast League Tigers in 2006, which was his first professional coaching assignment.
The Whitecaps first pitch in 2007 will be Thursday, April 5 at Dayton. The home opener is Monday, April 9 versus the Lansing Lugnuts at 6:35 p.m. and will be followed by a Farm Bureau Insurance fireworks show. The upcoming season will be highlighted with 18 Farm Bureau Insurance fireworks shows, which is the most in team history. Fifth Third Ballpark will host great entertainment all summer as great acts like Myron Noodleman, Rubber Boy and Birdzerk! return. There are already five bobblehead giveaways planned and more than 50 exciting promotions scheduled. For more information on the 2007 schedule and promotions visit www.whitecapsbaseball.com

Report card: '06 Whitecaps
Hello again.
It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to check in with Hit & Run, but that’s because I spent two months immediately following the West Michigan Whitecaps’ season glued to the Detroit Tigers throughout their postseason run to the World Series. What a wonderful ride! Except for the World Series, of course.
In the meantime, here's something that didn't get a chance to run in The Press: My annual end-of-season report card on the Whitecaps and list of the Top 10 prospects on the local low Class A Midwest League affiliate of the Tigers.
Don’t forget the Whitecaps won a championship this past fall.
The overall grades are reflective, for the most part, of a fantastic season-long run for West Michigan, which posted the MWL’s best record despite setting a franchise record for lowest single-season attendance.
The following are my final grades for the 2006 season:
HITTERS
1B Pedro Cotto -- B
3B Mark Haske -- C
DH Mike Hernandez -- B
SS Michael Hollimon -- B+
RF Matt Joyce -- B
LF Justin Justice -- B
LF Jeramy Laster -- C-
CF Cameron Maybin -- A
1B Rafael Mendez -- D
3B Cory Middleton -- D
2B Will Rhymes -- B-
C Joel Roa -- D-
C Dusty Ryan -- C+
ANALYSIS: The hitting lineup didn't produce as high of an average or as much power as advertised in spring training, but it was a complete team effort. Maybin, despite missing a month with a finger injury, exceeded expectations and was honored as both the Detroit Tigers' Minor League Player of the Year and the Midwest League's Prospect of the Year.
Team captain Hollimon had a monster second half, becoming the first player in club history to achieve a quadruple double -- double figures in doubles (29), triples (13), homers (15) and stolen bases (19).
Joyce and Rhymes were productive, but their averages dipped. The team had no full-time corner infielders with power and Ryan's decline from .300 in July to .245 at season's end was disappointing.
Defensively, it was the finest team in franchise history, especially up the middle with Ryan, Hollimon, Rhymes and Maybin.
Player of the Year
Maybin
PITCHERS
LHP Erik Averill -- B-
RHP Burke Badenhop -- A
RHP Anthony Claggett -- A
RHP Jose Fragoso -- B
LHP Luke French -- B
LHP Ramon Garcia -- A-
LHP Paul Hammond -- B+
RHP Josh Kauten -- B-
RHP Phil Napolitan -- C-
RHP Matt O'Brien -- B+
RHP Orlando Perdomo -- B
RHP Josh Rainwater -- B-
RHP Matt Rusch -- B+
RHP Ricky Steik -- B
RHP Sendy Vasquez -- B+
ANALYSIS: The pitching staff, which posted a league-best 2.96 ERA, featured top prospects Badenhop, who was named Detroit's Minor League Pitcher of the Year, and Claggett, who emerged as a dominant closer late in the season.
Injuries to Garcia and Perdomo in the second half had no effect on the league's deepest staff. The bullpen got fantastic performances from Rusch, Steik and Hammond. Vasquez emerged as a prospect in the second half with a personal 10-game winning streak.
Pitcher of the Year
Badenhop
FIELD STAFF
Manager Matt Walbeck -- A
Pitching coach A.J. Sager -- A
ANALYSIS: In his third season here, Walbeck, who was promoted to Double-A Erie (Pa.) on Monday, did his finest job, leading the team to a championship right from the start. He's a great teacher who gets the most of out of his players. He did so without a hitting coach on staff for most of the season.
Sager, who spent five seasons here but also was promoted to the Erie staff Monday, took a highly questionable staff this past summer and convinced them to throw strikes. He transformed a group with so-so talent into a dominant bunch of starters and relievers that formed the backbone of a title team.
FRONT OFFICE
Lew Chamberlin/Scott Lane -- D
Jim Jarecki -- A
Team staff -- A-
ANALYSIS: The team had a disappointing season at the gate, attracting a total of 356,155 fans and finishing with its worst attendance in the 13-year history of the franchise -- despite pumping $1.3 million into offseason improvements. Its previous low: 361,545 in 2003.
The fair weather, Maybin's exploits, ballpark upgrades and a championship season should've boosted attendance numbers, but managing partner Lew Chamberlin and team president Scott Lane, who insist 400,000 is their annual goal, put Maybin billboards up too late, failed to pump up advertising and promotion and concerned themselves too much with improvements for VIPs (outdoor suite seating and stadium club) while letting the regular customers foot the bill through rising ticket and concessions prices.
Both have experience operating a franchise through the honeymoon period, but that has long since ended. Team attendance has declined in nine of the past 10 years. The cost of attending a game has reached the breaking point for low Class A baseball.
The ballpark experience, though, remains first class due to the uncompromising efforts of vice president Jim Jarecki, who was named Midwest League Executive of the Year, and his courteous staff.
TOP 10 PROSPECTS
1. Maybin
2. Badenhop
3. Hollimon
4. Claggett
5. Joyce
6. Vasquez
7. Garcia
8. Ryan
9. Perdomo
10. Rusch
ANALYSIS: It wouldn't surprise me to see Maybin win the starting center fielder's job with the Tigers next spring. Yes, he's that talented. More than likely, he'll start at high Class A Lakeland (Fla.) or Double-A Erie and reach Detroit after the all-star break.
Badenhop and Claggett are good bets to reach the majors. Hollimon has a lot of skills, but, at age 24, he needs to keep improving to keep moving up. Joyce, Vasquez and Ryan all might reach the majors if they continue to make significant progress. In all, there's nothing but question marks beyond the top six -- and no sure things other than Maybin.

I still have dial up, and am unable to see videos online. Unless I want to wait 3 minutes to see 5 seconds of video, and then another 3 minutes to see another 5 seconds and the cycle continues. By then of course the video and the sound do not match up, and I click it off once again asking myself why I bother to try

That Roa clip had me grinning so much, that was one of his best moments on the field, and I remember I was so happy for him.
Watching the baseball highlights that are in both the videos was really cool, I could remember seeing most of them happen in person, which made me realize that we get treated to some really good baseball here with this team.
Don't even get me started on the second video's part of the final out from the MWL Championship... there were chills going down my back as I remembered that awesome night.

I mainly based the voice off the fact that he always had a very serious, solemn look on his face, and he didn't show much emotion on it. I didn't really talk to him enough to get a sense of his personality.

YOU should know of the guys struggles after having a player live with you...plus they have a life so maybe there is turmoil going on....didn't Pedro get down when he didn't do well?? Hard after you have worked so hard & even have a good BP then don't play well....Poke fun all you want....besides it is no secret, Dusty has been dogged here a lot...I just consider the sources...We support ALL the guys during their 5 monthes here, struggles, and highs...and try to encourage them, not make fun of them..I am glad you always have good days at your work/classes or whatever work you do....and not have to worry if you are going to make your dream come true..or get released, or repeat or get injured.... we have lots of respect for these ballplayers...
So they made fun of the way he talked. Nobody was being down on him. There's no reason to take it so personal.

The "f" word has become common and accepted as an expression of frustration when one has failed. Back in the day, such behavior was considered unacceptable, even by the mothers of the failures. Dreams coming true? A good friend came home in a body bag in 1964. 42 years later, I will now give the world a great, big, F...K on his behalf. He wouldn't have said it himself.

That said, my own hyprocrisy is in times of extreme crisis or frustration, the old words rise to my lips and it takes tremendous effort to suppress them. It can be done. It is truly a shame though when the back rows of a stadium can hear the player using four letter words above the music or listening to a preteen say something "sucks". I guess I'm getting too old.

For those "offended ears" maybe they should not sit so close...and as close as we sit, we never hear, but have read lips of others....Mendez, Hollimon....to name a couple....just the frusteration...like when the Host Families slide down in their seats when their guys strike out or muff a play...part of the game....NO ONE is perfect...Still amazed that they guys can throw, catch hit & run....they make it sometimes look so easy! And the stands. Why pretend people can't hear it?
For those "offended ears" maybe they should not sit so close
So when people hear the F-bombs, it's their fault for sitting close. These players can do no wrong with you sometimes. Just so you know, it doesn't matter where you sit in Marchant Stadium. Adults, kids, and yes, even some of the old people can hear them. You can't just move to another seat if you don't want to hear them. I personally don't mind, but there's nothing wrong with the players showing some restraint. It isn't that hard to do.

Unfortunately, that's just the way it is. As long as everyone understands that "by example" is the way the young people learn how to act. Personally, if I thought it would bring a championship, I would stand in front of the dugout and lead a series of f-bombs that would sound like the Hallelujah Chorus. Moving out of earshot is impossible in Lakeland. Unless, of course, I remain seated right here. Now ther's a good f...g idea!
Personally, if I thought it would bring a championship, I would stand in front of the dugout and lead a series of f-bombs that would sound like the Hallelujah Chorus.
I'm game. They can't throw us both out because that would cut attendance in half. I'll see if I can arrange background music as well.
Diffusing the f bombs for a minute, I was wondering if some of the hosts can tell us how the assignment of players are handled. Do you get any say in the matter. For instance, could you say that if Gorkys Hernandez makes the team, I would like to be his host? Conversely, do the Caps/Tigers ever go to a host family and say, "We've got this kid named Sizemore who really needs a nurturing family this year because ..." or "Audy doesn't understand English too well so we need someone who is bi-lingual"?

The players get a packet of host family profiles, tells of players that previously stayed with them along w/house rules, and players talk...so they know whom to stay away from or who to call first...the best is by recommendations of previous players, as they know how it is to live with certain host families...Unfortunately, Cameron Maybin was sort of treated with "kid gloves" due to his first round pick status...whethere good or bad..but generally the guys pick their families @ end of spring training but we also hold a get-acquainted party...guys are free to move out/on as same with host families if they "do not fit" in suituation....normally a smooth operations as most players have lived with families before but some are brand new....Generally a very good experience for families & players...

12-14-2006, 05:41 PM
All in all, I think the host family program is a wonderful idea, it really benefits both the players and the people who participate in the program. The players get a family they can call their own, which must be a huge comfort during a long season, and the families get to experience having a wonderful guest living with them.
The whole program wouldn't work without great families for the players to stay with, and from the host parents I've been able to meet, I'd say it's very clear why the program works so well.

Just received this e-mail from whitecapsmedia for upcoming banquet....Looks like a NIGHT OF STARS to me!..
COMSTOCK PARK, MI * DeVos Place in downtown Grand Rapids is going to resemble the home dugout at Comerica Park on Wednesday, January 17 when the Detroit Tigers Winter Caravan makes a stop at the Whitecaps Winter Baseball Banquet. Jim Leyland, the 2006 American League Manager of the Year, and Tom Brookens, the ‘Caps new manager, will serve as the night’s keynote speakers. Several big name Tigers are also scheduled to join them, including American League Championship Series MVP Placido Polanco and American League Rookie of the Year Justin Verlander. Other Tigers slated to attend the Banquet include Mike Maroth, Chris Shelton, Craig Monroe, Marcus Thames, Vance Wilson, Gene Lamont, Lloyd McClendon and Rafael Belliard. The Whitecaps Banquet will be the Tigers only public appearance in Grand Rapids.
Proceeds from the Winter Baseball Banquet go to the Whitecaps Inner-City Youth Baseball and Softball Program and the Detroit Tigers Foundation. Since the program’s inception in 1995, more than a quarter of a million dollars has been pledged, allowing more than 5,000 children the opportunity to participate in organized baseball. Since the establishment of the Detroit Tigers Foundation in 2005, the charity has donated more than a million dollars in Tigers tickets, grants and scholarships in the greater Detroit community.

I realize you are cracking a joke, but just in case you are unaware, the Tigers players are chosen to attend the Tigers fest caravans. They don't choose to go (although I suppose they can refuse to go where they are assigned). The only reason I am aware of that was last January, Joel mentioned to some at our table that he was really excited when he was told he would be coming back to WM in the caravan.

Maybin invited to Major League camp
Young outfielder will get experience with big-league staff
By Jason Beck / MLB.com
DETROIT -- Cameron Maybin played in a few big-league games last Spring Training. This time, though, he's going to be around for a while.
The Tigers have decided to extend to Maybin an invitation to Major League camp, giving Detroit's top prospect and the former first-round pick a chance to train, work out and play with Detroit's established players while allowing him to take instruction from big-league coaches.
Maybin will be 19 years old when he reports to Spring Training in February. He won't turn 20 until April 4.
Maybin, drafted 10th overall in the 2005 First-Year Player Draft, already was regarded as Detroit's top position player before he played a game.
Once Justin Verlander and Joel Zumaya were promoted to the Majors, Maybin rose to the top of Detroit's farm system after an impressive first pro season. Maybin batted .304 with nine home runs, 20 doubles and 69 RBIs in 101 games for Class A West Michigan. He also stole 27 bases in 34 attempts and added 50 walks. He missed part of the season after stretching a ligament in his right index finger.
The invite is expected to be a learning experience for Maybin rather than a chance to make the Tigers roster, which already is set with at least four outfielders. He's slotted to begin the regular season at Class A Lakeland and have an opportunity to climb the developmental ladder later in the year.

Lose Maroth, gain Inge. Sounds good to me! I'm excited to get the chance to talk to Dan Dickerson- last spring I got to help interview him a few times on a little TV show I used to help host, it'll be interesting to see if he remembers that at all.

Maroth was here last year, but it has been a few years since Brandon was here, so it is time for him to return & get accolades from his West Michigan Fan base...he was such a fan favorite when here in 1999...the lucky ones are the ones who have tickets to this event...All 900+ of us!
