View Full Version : The one thing I've really enjoyed this year

I've brought this up in game threads a few times but I thought I'd bring it up in its own thread.

I don't know if it really has won us a ton of games but the one thing I've really enjoyed this year is the shift of the approach with our baserunning. We are much more assertive about trying to go the extra base this year than we have in a long time. It's instinctive now and it's fun to see.

Just fun watching us take chances and more often than not it works. I enjoy watching us put the pressure on the defense.

Me too. I think it has paid off.

The thing I have enjoyed is that the mistakes on the basepaths have been minimal. For the most part the players have been aggressive but smart.

I think Lamont has been very good as the third base coach.

Almost all the "mistakes" have been against Irichio this year. :classic:

I've always argued that the play a guy is out at third or home by five feet quite often can be the same play that a guy stands into the bag. All it really takes is a throw two feet off the line or a missed cutoff man or a throw up the line. Even at the ML level rarely do those plays get executed to the point where the runner is out. Of course when he does, it looks silly - as Irichio as proven.

Another familiar face missing on this 2006 team is Juan Samuel. Him and Bobby Higginson carried curses for the Tigers.

DTroppens, aren't you some kind of writer or something? You should probably learn the name Ichiro (he's been around for years) instead of Irichio, which you typed twice.

One play I will mention from today that I thought was good was scoring on that foul pop out where Swisher made the great play. Not every team would try to go on that and it was nice to see them take advantage of the fact that there was no way Swisher could throw him out.

I agree. I also thought Swisher should have just let that go in that situation.

Yep, it's not very often I'm rooting for the other teams player to make a great catch, but you knew it was giving us a run.

All in all I've been very pleased with our base running except for two things:

1. Don't run on Ichiro anymore, please.

2. Don't have Carlos Guillen try to steal third with regularity. (Thankfully this has stopped in the last month or so)

Everything about the Tigers is different, including the base-running. They are playing at a really high level when it comes to pressuring the defense which is pretty amazing since they really don't have anybody who can do that with sheer speed.

JJC,
If I was writing an article for press I'd be concerned with it. This is a message board. If you have problems with me spelling names that you are able to make out despite my misgivings here please put me on your ignore list. I just don't find it that important to go on another site to find out how to spell every player's name I don't know right off hand when it's just for people here on the board. If it hurts my credibility then so be it. This is supposed to be fun - not work.

Man this site is really going down hill in just the last week alone. Everyone is fighting with everyone now. Everyone wants to be put on the ignore list.........what happened here?

slim pickens,

Here's my whole take on this. For all the times I've seen Mike Ilitch's name, I can't honestly tell you if it is Ilitch or Illitch. Maricucci? I called him Mooch so I didn't have to check his spelling all the time. And even Zumaya's name I'm not sure if that's spelled right here. Now, if I 100 percent needed the right spelling I'd get it, but I'm not going to be overly concerned about it on a message board.
Now to why I commented as I did to JJC - Usually when someone has a comment towards you that says "aren't you this or that or something? and follows it up with a comment like "You probably should learn the name... he's been around for years" it's probably not being addressed by that person trying to be simply helpful. Think of times when you hear that approach face to face. It's usually not from a pperson that's simply trying to be helpful. It's an approach that's sarcastic and essentially smart alecky. And sensing that, that I felt I had a right make the comment I did directed to JJC. Sorry if you thought I didn't.

OK I understand your point, I have no problem with it what so ever. I appreciate you take the time to try to talk and be civil, instead of just jumping down someones throat as well!

For a team that doesn't have a ton of speed they sure do a good job of picking & choosing. Not to mention that slide by Thames last week. Great stuff.

Yes, thanks for the civility. I know it took me a while to get used to "Message Board Culture" after never being on a message board before. I've learned to let spelling errors (even my own) go by. But as new members join constantly, we've all got to have the patience to help them learn the culture of our board. Keep having fun!

I probably could've stayed away from the "just hit the ignore" comment as well.

I bet you'll spell his name right the next time though.

Great Estrepe,
Now you are correcting me! :classic:

Tiger 337,
Like I said I still don't even know with 100 percent certainty how to spell Ilitch. And let's see if I can get it right without looking "Iricho"

Zooming down to the past posts...
I honestly screwed it up again. I guess I just have the way I say his name wrong as well.

Ichiro
I honestly blew it. But I'm not going to look at a website everytime I need to post it here. I have enough times where I do need to do that and when I don't need to I'm not going to change.

JJC,
Sorry if I took your post too far in left field.

To get back to my original point though...

I listened to the SFly on the radio and finally got to see it last night. That was pretty sweet. On Ordonez's single to left in the first a good throw home would've nailed Infante (he was just turning around third when the ball was being picked up, the TV camera had a great angle of that) but it wasn't even close. A good throw and he would've been out by 5-10 feet for sure.

That stuff happens all the time.
