Sounds like we could do a spinoff... "Where in the world is Bobby Higginson?"

I'm actually surprized he isn't a Devil Ray or since he was Garner's boy, an Astro. I guess the Devil Rays are up and coming and no longer the retirement home of mediocre Major League players past their prime.
If a former Tiger does come back, I wouldn't mind seeing switch hitting Tony Clark back in the English D.

I guess my attempt at humor through an obscure reference kind of worked. Is he really driving limos for his company?
Oh, and the woman who playerd the chief on Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego died a few years ago rather suddenly.

Yeah I happen to know someone that saw him down by the player entrance on opening day driving one of his limos.

"Chief" is dead. Lynn Thigpen. She died a couple years ago. So that won't work.
And yes, Rockapella (who is still an A capella group, and still ridiculously awesome www.myspace.com/rockapella ; www.rockapella.com) will sing the hit song "Where In the World is...Bobby Higginson?"

The sudden spike in performace this season makes me wonder if Higgy really was jinxing this team. I really liked the guy, but perhaps it truly was addition by subtraction.

I have submitted this idea several times over the past few years. We were winners prior to his rookie season and were big losers his entire stay on the Tigers team.

I'm through bashing Higginson. He's not on the team anymore. He took out a full page ad thanking the fans and that's a nice way to end it. He's just a former player now. I'm glad he's still in the community. He's got a lot of money to spend so might as well spend it here.

article in the freep weekend of 6/25 had an article on Bobby and his limo service and he's doing something else. He had no other comment about the team other than he was pleased to see them doing well and we was glad to be out of baseball now that he had other interests.

One classy thing in 12 years. Doesn't make up for the 1000's of kids he snubbed over the years wanting an autograph. Never ever seen him sign once.

Spring Training 2004. My then-three-year-old son and I stood by the players' exit while one player after another filed out. We do not ask people for autographs (philosophical thing, topic for another day) but we thought it was fun to see everybody, so we just stood by and said hello as people went by.
Bobby Higginson filed past, signed many autographs, then headed for his car before catching my son out the corner of his eye. He doubled back, came over to Tony and extended his hand, saying, "How you doin', bud?"
They shook hands, I thanked him and he went on his way. My son declared Bobby Higginson to be his favorite player.
So there.

I stand corrected. I am glad you and your son had a good experience.
Me and my kids watched the Tigers several dozen times at Tiger Stadium, Comerica, Lakeland and 6-7 other stadiums the past 17 years. The kids were within 10-15 feet of Higginson probably 15-20 times and never once did he acknowledge them. They were always polite and asked at the appropriate times. I realize signing autographs is not a ball players main priority but they should do it once in a while. There is a time and a place when all ball players should make themselves accessable. We watched the Tigers at the Trop one year, Jose Lima and Jeff Weaver stood next to the Tigers dugout and signed for 45 minutes after a game. This is what I remember the most from the trip, I couldn't even tell you who won the ballgame.
Higginson will always be a horses behind in my mind.

Myabe my experience was skewed from seeing the Tigers on the road for many years. In KC and STL, he was consistently the first guy signing and the last to leave. One Saturday, a guy shouted that his kid was a big fan of Bobby's. Higgy said to bring the kid early the next day. Sure enough, next morning, Bobby popped out of the dugout with the first trickle of fans, saw the guy and asked where his boy was. Higgy talked to them for about 10 minutes, then had to go be interviewed for pre-game.
Thinking about it, he was usually the first guy doing pre-game warm-ups and the last guy to leave the field.
Never cared for the stripper stories, but in my experience, Higgy was never low class with the fans. Don't know about the work ethic, but he always appeared to work hard.

I would agree with this also, Higginson always worked hard at being the best ball player he could be.

It seems like just about every player, if he hangs around long enough, will become the subject of someone's story that he refused to sign autographs, and this tends to become legend about the guy generally being a jerk to everyone.
It's nice that, in the era of the message board, such anecdotes are so easily and quickly answered with anecdotes to the contrary. Perhaps this will temper the growth of the legends.

A plus for Higginson from me...don't remember the details but my wife took our son Ryan to a ST game around 2000. Ryan came home with Higgy's batting gloves and he had signed them. They are still around here somewhere.

Exactly. I've always maintained that, if Bobby hadn't signed that huge contract, he would've gone down as one of the most popular Tigers ever.
People tend to forget how popular Higgy was with the fans before he started getting paid so much. A lot of folks resented him when his statistics didn't measure up to his contract.
But before the contract, Higgy was wildly popular in Detroit.

my beef with him wasn't the contract. I ignore that stuff. My beef was his harping to the press after trades and his constant whining. Every spring he "had it all figured out now".
His comments after the Weaver trade and how he treated Pena cemented his place. He's a certified jerk.

If he would have hustled and not ostrocized his teammates and not ran his mouth in the media I would have liked him. I'll never forget him ripping into Omar Infante for not running out a popup and then him doing the exact same thing in a game about a month later. Great leader.
