“Let’s not forget that there have been some circumstances in the last few years where baseball was booming because of what guys were doing, and people were making a lot of money,” Leyland said. “I don’t condone any wrongdoing with anybody. I don’t know if anybody cheated. I don’t want to know if anybody cheated. But I do know this: Baseball recently, with the home runs and the home run races, profited a great deal from what was going on. “And the biggest part of it was that the fans were loving every minute of it. And I don’t think anybody can disagree with that.”

Leyland puts things in the proper perspective once again.

Not possible. Know why? Leyland's got nothing to lose.

Sounds like Leyland is trying to justify the means to the end. That is, who cares if anyone cheated, because we had a blast with all the home runs and the home run races. And everyone came out the winner.

....everyone, of course, except those players who did not cheat.

Leyland isn't necessarily justifying it... rather, I think he's saying that baseball and fans both loved it when these guys were hitting homeruns, but all of a sudden, are acting hypocritical now that the scandal is upon us.

Fans didn't know that the players were cheating. By no means have they been hypocritical...if they knew about the players cheating back then, supported the players, and now turned, that would be hypocritical...but they hadn't a clue.

But there was nothing out yet that said they were juiced. You can't possibly blame the fans for backing the players when the may have suspicions but nothing more.

You say this until one starts doing it, then they are voted out and never heard from again.

I still don't understand this HGH thing. One group says they have medical backing and says that HGH doesn't do anything except possibly cause health issues, then you have another group that says it's the second coming of steriods, it just can't be detected. If it does benefit the body, without side affects as mentioned, it better be legal soon and if it doesn't do anything, why the fuss about taking it.

I never had a problem with it, and i still dont............because i gaurenntee everyone who has played the game has taken something. All these scandals are gonna do is bring alot of heros names through the mud, so as far as I am concerned, they have a new policy in effect, and it starts from there, there is no need to go back into peoples past.

I don't think that Leyland is so much getting on the fans by saying this as he's pointing the finger directly at Major League Baseball.

Baseball benefitted from renewed interest in the game after the '94 strike, and both casual and die-hard baseball fans were thrilled by the McGwire-Sosa contest of 1998. Because people were getting back into the game and baseball became extremely popular again, MLB, which probably knew about abuses with regards to steroids and HGH, did nothing - and therefore, they shouldn't go and throw the book at guys like Grimsley and Bonds.

That's what I think Leyland's talking about.

I hope this is Leyland's way of telling idiots like John McCain to shut the hell up... Because if Jim Leyland is telling John McCain to shut up and stop trying to get his ugly mug on TV all the g-d time, then Jim Leyland just became one of my favorite people. John McCain sucks.

Fans didn't know that the players were cheating.
When Bonds hit his 73, they didn't *know* he was cheating either. But the spectre was there.

I think he's trying to say that baseball needs to take a lot of responsibility for being enablers.

They came out winners because they didn't risk their health.

Stories came out during 1998 about McGwire taking steroids but they kind of just went away.

Plus, Jim Bouton told us years ago they were all taking amphetamines illegally.

Refresh my memory if you would. What was the basis of these stories? Questions concerning his size and the fact that he took Andro? Or did he actually have ties to other steroids?

As I remember it, first there was a rumor that he was taking steroids but then he said it was andro which was not banned at the time even though it was doing the same thing for as steroids might do. After that, the story went away. I think the players could say the same thing about a lot of substances. If they use a substance which is not yet on the banned list even though it should be, is this cheating?
