Is the Detroit Tigers according to Peter Gammons in the ESPN podcast where he's talking to Dan Patrick on the Dan Patrick show. They first talked about Tiger Stadium and some of the longest HR's there, then Peter started gushing about the pitching, and calling the defense "absolutely brilliant". He's also looking forward to the Tigers/Reds matchup, but doesn't know if the Tigers will be the best team in the end, but right now they are the best.

like he doesn't know if the tigers will be the best team in the end between the reds and tigers? or the best in the end of the season of all teams (more understandable)

Gammons is officially correct with the White Sox loss we are alone in first! W00t!

Agree. Pete has been talking about them a lot. All of the guys on Baseball Tonight have been gushing over Verlander and especially Zumaya. It's been a lot of fun so far.

Gammons has always liked the Tigers, especially the mid-80's team, especially Gibson.

Baseball Tonight just talked about the Cincy v Detroit series; mentioned Granderson's love for Griffey, of how excited he is to play in the same game.
Man, I love baseball!

I read a blurb about Granderson and Griffey that in one of the Detroit Papers.
Kurkjan and Brantley said that the Tigers will be around for a long time and they weren't sure about the Reds.
Brantley said that the left handers versus Dunn and Griffey would decide the series... well since we have Maroth and Robertson both going this series... that is stating the obvious.
Basically they believe that the pitching and defense will keep the Tigers around. We will see. I can't see the Tigers pitching staying this incredibly hot.

I turned 50 today and it was pretty sweet waking up knowing that the Tigers were in first place, even if in a tie. And had the best record in the majors. Things got better still listening to the win on internet radio and then later the Sux losing. Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to us all.

Otoh, I see no reason for it to go particularly cold. When you look at all of baseball, who really has a staff all that dependable? Out of all such teams, Detroit still ranks as one of the best if not the best. Will the staff get rocked throughout the season? It would certainly be a safe bet to say they will. That doesn't bother me. I'm more concerned with how long they lay on the mat. The key is to get back on the horse and start winning again right away. So far, the Tigers are doing that. I see nothing thus far that shows me that they won't continue to do that.

For all you kids under 30:
This is what it's like -- that wonderful feeling of waking up in the morning, looking at the newspaper and relishing the fact that the Detroit Tigers have the best team in baseball.
Ain't life grand when your team is on top? Who knows if they can keep it up? But right now, I'm happy as can be. That's good enough.

I remember when I used to look for the Tiger score. That is before this year. It was more likely that they lost. But I was always hopeful. I always wondered by how much they lost. Now days I am more hopeful that they won and by how much. I remember in the past (prior to 93) how I used to keep track of how many games back they are or how many games ahead. When we were losing I trained myself not to look at that because it was to painful to follow. Well I am looking again and it is more enjoyable to follow.

I know the feeling...having attended OSU during the years the Indians were good was quite the test of my patience. If only this could have happened 10 years earlier, so I could shut up all those bandwagon Indians!

while I'm no longer at OSU, everywhere in Cbus I go hears about how well they are doing, and anytime I go to a bar, and the Tigers are on, that game gets turned on.

I heard Gammons interviewed on a local sports radio station here in Miami after the last KC game. The host was Jon Sciambi (sp) who occasionally calls games for ESPN. I was struck by how convinced Gammons was that the Tigers were for real and would be in contention all year. He said he thought the Tigers would make the playoffs as a wildcard. During this interview he also "gushed" over the young arms of the team and described Zumaya from the night before as simply "un-hittable" and then described him as "awesome" at least three or four times.
His thoughts were a response to the question: Which teams are playing well currently and are apt to fade by the end of the year? One team that he mentioned as a team not likely to keep up was the Reds. He really seemed to be impressed by the White Sox, Tigers and Mets.
To all of the regular contributers on this board I would like to extend a big THANK YOU! I have enjoyed reading your posts full of excellent information, stimulating opinion and tremendous knowledge!

There was nothing condescending or otherwise objectionable about what Tyrus wrote, OT. Talk about trying to stir up trouble where none exists.

What the Reds in town reminds me of... is all the clamoring to trade Verlander and Zumaya for Adam Dunn.
Now... I listed a boatload (some would say load of sh*t) of issues I had with Dunn, and why I wouldn't trade for him, especially when the names were Verlander & Zumaya. But I still like the guy, and would still trade for him... just not with Verlander and Zumaya. I believed that last year, and feel the same this year.
But... now that our pitching has far exceeded anyone's expectations... THIS is the period of time that I would be interested in trading for him, excluding Maybin and our MLB starters (pitching and lineup). I think Yoda was vehemently in support of the same line of thinking last year as well, if I remember correctly... that... until we have solid pitching that can get us to the playoffs, no high-end pitching prospect can be traded, even if it gets us someone by the name of Dunn and we know how much some of you like him...
Now I know the Reds are going to demand the best names we got in Grandy, Zumaya, Maybin, etc... But what if they flop by the trade deadline, due to inferior pitching, and are again willing to listen to offers for Dunn. I would be willing to trade Tata, Humberto, and ANY other minor leaguer not named Maybin, 3 for 1, for Dunn. Let's say it's Ledezma or Whelan.
Would Cincy be interested?
Would they go ALL minor league pitching?
Would we be interested?
Would Dunn be the guy to get us over the hump if we're fighting for a playoff spot?
And... I STILL would not trade Grandy, Verlander, or Zumaya for him...

I'm not a huge Iffy fan, but I can see the column's appeal for some. It has to be taken with the right spirit -- it's not supposed to be hard-hitting, in-depth Pulitzer Prize winning sportswriting. It's just goofy fun, an attempt to resurrect the old Iffy the Dopester from the 1930s.
I think the Iffy column is geared at people like my late grandmother, who got a kick out of the silliness you can often find in baseball.
