A few months ago my wife asked me what I wanted for my Birthday. I couldn't think of too many things but because I enjoy replaying baseball seasons I figured I should ask her for some game seasons I didn't have for my current game of choice - called Replay Baseball - to complete my collection. The only problem was the years I don't own are pretty bad ones for the Tigers. Still, she purchased two of them for me (1952 and 1954). I could've left the games in the closet never to be played but I decided to do something I haven't ever done before. I am playing a 1952 Tiger replay hoping that the team will do a bit better than its anemic 50-104 record. This was a bad team folks. In fact until recently it was the worst team in Tiger history. Still there are some good names on the team. Walt Dropo, Jerry Priddy, Johnny Groth, Vic Wertz, Hal Newhouser and even George Kell (was traded early in the year) to name a few. I started this replay a long time ago and have posted the results somewhere else. However, I figured I'd edit, copy and past those results here as well. I'll catch up eventually.
On dates the Tigers play their games are played. On off dates or rain dates I randomly pick another AL game just for some variety. Many of the posts I made without the rosters near me so all I had were last names. Hopefully people can forgive that. Also forgive the typos as I just post these fast without reading them over.

Game #1 April 15, 1952
Detroit 5, St. Louis 4 (16 innings)
WOW! What a way to start a replay! And with a rare Tiger win no less. The Browns took a 2-0 lead in the first inning my Nieman hit a two-run homer off Dizzy Trout and things didn't look too good at ol' Briggs Stadium. Detroit scored a run in the fifth when Johnny Groth singled in Vic Wertz, but the Browns scored again on a Courtney double that plated Dick Kryhoski, who reached base on a two-out error by George Kell. The Browns led 3-1 and kept the lead until the Tigers' ninth.
During the ninth Pat Mullin homered with one out and Groth followed with a walk. An out later Joe Ginsberg hit a two-out triple tying the game off of reliever Stachel Paige, who replaced Ned Garver after the homer. Both teams scored a run in the 13th inning, with Detroit's coming on a Kell homer. Finally in the 16th, Ginsberg doubled and went to third on a Billy Hoeft sacrifice. He then scored on Jerry Priddy's single earning the Tigers the win. There were 10 pitchers in this game - 5 on each side. That's saying something because I'm not one to use a ton of pitchers.

April 16, 1952
St. Louis 5, Detroit 1
St. Louis' Rivera hit a two-run homer and had an RBI-single to lead the Browns to the win. Bryne pitched for St. Louis and went the distance, tossing a five-hitter. He did walk five but the Tigers' hapless bats couldn't do much with the help. The only run wsa scored when Johnny Lipon singled, George Kell sacrificed him to second and Vic Wertz doubled. Wertz had three of the Tiger hits. Art Houtteman allowed five runs (four earned) in seven innings to take the loss.

Can the Tigers finish above .500? Okay a little early for that talk especially considering these are the Browns. Still the Tigers started 0-6 during the actual 1952 year. Hoot Evers and Vic Wertz hit homers and Johnny Lipon had two RBI-singles to lead the Tigers to the win. Evers had three hits. Hal Newhouser struggled but went the distance on the mound allowing 10 hits and a walk. Rivera had three hits for St. Louis and scored two runs while Dyck had two RBI-doubles.

April 18, 1952
Cleveland 12, Detroit 2
The Indians hit three homers off starting hurler Ted Gray with Larry Doby and Ray Boone hitting two-run shots each. Al Rosen had the other, a slolo shot. Dale Mitchell also provided a two-run triple. Bob Feller struck out only two and walked six but the Tigers couldn't do too much against him. Only Matt Batts had as much as an RBI-double against him.
Tigers 2-2
Cleveland vs. Tigers 1-0
Game #5
April 19, 1952
Cleveland 10, Detroit 4
The Tiger pitching staff is getting hammered! Virgil Trucks lasted just three innings as Ray Boone went 4-for-5 with a three-run triple, an RBI-double and an RBI-single included in his day. He had two chances at the cycle but singled and flew out. Jim Hegan had a big day as well going 3-for-5 with a three-run shot and an RBI-double.
Cliff Mapes hit a two-run homer for Detroit while Johnny Groth hit a solo shot.

SweetLou,
Oh we'll see him when he leaves the Tigers as well! Last night he was smacking doubles against us. I didn't know how to feel about that one! But that's 50 games into the replay. That tells you how many posts I have to go yet to catch up here.

Game #6 1 of DH
April 20, 1952
Cleveland 6, Detroit 2
Bob Lemon tossed a six-hitter and also hit one of four Indian homers of Art Houtteman to pace the Indians to the win. Other homer hitters were Ray Boone, Luke Easter and Harry Simpson. Detroit scored two runs in the first to create false hope. Jerry Priddy walked and Johnny Groth singled. George Kell had a hit-and-run ground out and Vic Wertz doubled them in. There wasn't much after that.

Game 2 of DH

Dizzy Trout was made dizzy as he allowed 10 runs in six innings, allowing eight hits and seven walks. Larry Avila went 2-for-4 with a two-run double and a triple while Starting pitcher Steve Gromek hit an RBI-double and drove in a run with a bases-loaded walk. Gromek allowed six hits and struck out 11 and went the distance on the mound.

Chicago 3, Detroit 1 (11 innings)
The starters did an outstanding job - Ted Gray for Detroit and Saul Rogovin for the White Sox. Both allowed just one runwhile out there. The Detroit run was scored when George Kell was plated on Steve Souchock's groud out. Cleveland scored on a second-inning homer by Eddie Robinson.
Robinson ended up being the hero at the end as well, hitting a two-run shot with one out off of Virgil Trucks in the 11th.

Game #9
April 26, 1952
Detroit 4, Cleveland 2 (17 innings)
Man, I've already had a ton of extra-inning games! Joe Ginsberg hit a two-run homer off of Cleveland reliever Lou Brissie to earn the Tigers the win. Before this inning Bob Lemon went 15 INNINGS against the Tigers and allowed just five hits and five walks. The only hit that hurt him, which tied the game in the bottom of the ninth inning was a two-run shot by Cliff Mapes. The Indians actually broke a scoreless tie in the top of the 10th against Detroit starter Art Houtteman (10Ip,2ER,6H,5K,1W) when Lemon singled and scored on Larry Doby's two-run homer. After Houtteman Hal newhouser tossed 5 1/3 innings of shutout ball (much of that on his B grades) and Hal White earned the win with 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball.

Game #10
April 27, 1952
Detroit 11, Cleveland 10
Detroit scored two runs in the seventh and five in the eighth to earne the impressive come-from-behind win. The big blows in the eighth were a two-run single by Johnny Groth and a three-run double by Don Kolloway (column 1 40 reading). Kolloway also had an RBI-single earlier while Groth, who had four singles, had a two-run single earlier as well. Ted Gray started and allowed nine of the runs. Hal White allowed a run in one inning of work but got the save.
Larry Doby and Dale Mitchell each had two RBI-singles for Cleveland while Bob Kenney hit a two-run triple.

Game #11 April 30, 1952
Detroit 5, Boston 4
Look at taht! And we won it with a run in the top of the ninth after Boston tied it in the eighth. Actually let's go back to the top of the eighth when Detroit took the lead on a solo homer by Vic Wertz. In the bottom half three straight walks off Trucks to start the inning gave Boston a serious chance of taking the lead. Instead Goodman hit a flyout that scored a run and Walt Dropo, who will be a Tiger later in the season, helped out his future teammates by grounding into a DP. Then in the ninth Don Kolloway hit a solo homer off Randy Scarborough. Niel Berry drove in two Tiger runs but one was with a DP grounder and the other on a 2-1 ground out which means he's going to miss a few games soon.

Apparently the Tigers want to get to .500. Ted Gray tossed a complete-game victory to outhurl Eddie Lopat who also went the distance. The difference was Jerry Priddy's two-run homer and Cliff Mapes' homer. Mapes also had what we call a SF these days to cap the scoring.

The Yankees scored three runs in the first, second and fourth innings to blow the game open early and often. Games #15 & 16
May 4, 1952 DH
Detroit 2, Philadelphia 1 (10 innings)
The Tiger broke a 1-1 tie in the 10th when George Kell hit a two-out single and went to second on Ferris Fain's error at first. The error cost the Athletics as Steve Souchock singled Kell in with the game-winning run off Athletic starter Bobby Shantz. In the bottom of the 10th Virgil Trucks completed his 10-inning complete game victory by getting three of the four batters he faced out. Eddie Joost did walk with two out but Fain grounded out to end the game.
Detroit's first run was scored on a Jerry Priddy solo homer in the third inning. Meanwhile, the Athletics scored when Fain doubled and eventually scored on Billy Hitchcock's single. Philadelphia hit into five double plays.
Detroit 8, Philadelphia 3
The Tigers tied the game with two runs in the eighth inning on a two-run double by Don Kolloway and then won it in the top of the 12 when they scored five runs with four coming on a grand slam homer by Steve Souchock. Before that four-run shot Don Kolloway drove in what really was the winning run. The Tigers had troubles hitting Morrie Martin (a pitcher with a 5 in column 3 and a 5 in column 5) as he went 6 2/3 innings allowing just one run. Hal Newhouser pitched 10 innings of ball for Detroit, allowing only one earned run. Dizzy Trout (a pretty bad card) tossed one inning of relief to get the win while Ken Johnson (1-1-4-f-5-2) got the save. In the land of bad pitchers, this was a pretty good pitcher's duel for the most part. That should tell you something about the offenses on each side.
Detroit's Record: 8-8 (this team lost over 100 games folks! But we have some issues. Jerry Priddy is missing the next 17 games and Don Kolloway and Joe Ginsberg are out for a bit too. Still just the fact this team is at .500 is something. They do have some solid starters but the offense, defense and the relief pitching are really really bad.

Pat Mullin walked and then Don Kolloway singled in Groth with two out. Chicatgo got just six hits and one walk off HOutteman and suffereted from two double plays. Joe Ginsberg hit a two-run homer off of Chicago's Luis Aloma in the bottom of the 11th with two out to earn the Tigers the win. The Tigers had a Pat Mullin double with one out in the 11th and then Al Federoff singled. Mullin tried to score but Sam Mele threw him out at the plate from right field. However, his great play was ruined when Ginsberg homered. Mullin also homered in the fourth. Chicago's sole run was provided by Mele with a homer off of starter Hal Newhouser. Newhouser went the first nine innings and Dick Littlefield tossed the final two innings to get the win.
Detroit 6, Detroit 4
Thank God for the White Sox! They were actually pretty solid this season but they've now lost three straight to the Tigers. This time it was a three-run eighth that gave the Tigers the win. With one out Al Federoff singled and stole second. Russ Sullivan singled, putting runners on first and third and then Neil Berry drove in Federoff with a suicide squeeze that was misplayed by White Sox first baseman Eddie Robinson, putting runners on first and hitrd. Billy Hoeft batted for himself and singled in another run and Kell later singled in the third run. Hoeft tossed the ninth (his second inning) and got the win. Robinson hit a solo homer for Chicago.

Washington record: 5-1
The Tigers will play 156 games in this replay (two games finished in ties) and unless there are a few ties the Tigers are projected to win 68-69 games right now. That's 18-19 more than they actually did during the actual season. It will be interesting to see if they can keep up this pace. I'm guessing when Vic Wertz, George Kell and Jerry Pridy leave, things will get ugly.

Boston scored three runs in the second, seventh and eighth innings to blow this one open with three Red Sox batters - Walt Dropo, Sammy White and starting pitcher Bill Wight - hitting homers. Wight's was a three-run blast. Dropo went 4-for-5 with four RBIs. Even his DP groundout in the first inning plated a run. Marlin Stuart, who allowed all three hoemers, did have an RBI-single. Detroit didn't help themselves by committing four errors (two each by Al Federoff and Neil Berry) allowing five of the 12 Red Sox runs to be unearned. Things are starting to fall apart for the Tigs, as they really should. This isn't a good team.

Al Zarilla had a two-run double in the second, Eddie Robinson hit a solo homer in the sixth and Minnie Minoso had an RBI-double in the seventh to lead the White Sox to this first-game victory at Comiskey Park. Starting pitcher and Sox winning pitcher Joe Dobson actuallys cored the winning run. He was the first batter to face Detroit reliever Dick Littlefield (we're going to have to trade that guy I think) and he doubled. Nellie Fox sacrificed him to third and an out later Minoso singled him in.
Detroit had runners on first and second with no out in the ninth trailing by two. However, Johnny Lipon hit into a line drive hit-and-run double play makint it two out. Al Federoff singled in Don Kolloway, who singled, to cut the gap to 4-3 but pinch hitter Steve Souchock flew out to end the game. Hoot Evers also had an RBI-double for the Tigers.

I am sorry I haven't kept up with this. I'm actually in early July in the real replay! But it's new to all of you so I'll sneak in a few more results tonight. This team is doing much better than it should. Another guy that I know that's doing the entire 1952 MLB season has the Tigers doing very close to what I have them doing. It's apparent some of the team's issues were deeper than what a board game can create. Having two of us creating so similar results (me being a Tiger fan and the other guy who could care less how the Tigers do) kind of has me thinking that way. Everytime I play the team I think "they really are not that bad." Now they aren't going to be playing .550 ball or even .520 ball when I continue this thread, but it's becoming apparent they are not going to come close to losing 100 games without a serious losing skid in the near future.

sorry if this was asked, but what are these replays? Are they video tape? Books?

The question in my head now is what season to do next?
I have games for:
1908, 1935, 1940, 1950, 1954, 1961, 1966, 1968, 1969, 1972, 1978 and pretty much every 1980s season with this game. I can make cards for other seasons with another game for other cool years like 1967 as well.
I have done an AL season replay from 1946. That Tiger team did very well. You could look at that team and see it could "overachieve" rather easily. I'm thinking by the time I complete this set this year's season will be done and completed by the company. I'm thinking trying to repeat this year's season would be a lot of fun. But I'm guessing it will be very tough to do that as well. I don't think this year's team will do well in the roll-playing forum for most games.

I think 1961 would be a fun one.

Anthony,
Thanks for the question. It is a board game with player cards for each player during the 1952 season called Replay Baseball. Essentially you roll two or three six-sided dice and use those numbers created by the dice rolls to get game results by taking the pitcher readings and adjusting it to the batter's card. It also has defensive factors as well.
I am replaying the 1952 season for the Tigers using the actual starting pitchers they used that season in each game. The lineups aren't the exact lineups. The game has an injury system that is very accurate that keeps from having players "overused". I also have a sheet with all the season's transations so when trades happen, they happen in my game as well. For example George Kell started this season with the Tigers but will be playing against the Tigers by it's end.

Estrepe,
1961 would be a ton of fun. And I like seasons like that because if the Tigers don't win then that's okay. They didn't win it anyway. Anything I do is icing on top of the cake. Right now I also have a 1940 AL replay going and that's not quite as fun because I "know" the Tigers won the AL that year and I could only make them do "worse." It kind of takes the fun out of it. I like to find seasons that it looks like I can do a bit better without any "funny" stuff being done.
1961 is always right there. I think what I will do when I do that season is play out the entire Tiger AND Yankee season to see what shakes down.
1968 is always tempting too for a few reasons. First, because it was a pitching era the games go so fast. Second, this set was my first season I had with this game and the Tigers LOST in the opening round of a MLB tourney I played. I think Cleveland ended up winning it. But because the Tigers did so bad I only ended up playing about 7 games with them. I kind of want to make up for that.

Anthony,
It's kind of geeky. I've been doing it since I was 9. I used to laugh at those people playing D&D in those mall stores. Then one day I realized my sports games really mirror that - except my games are based on actual events. But really I'm no "cooler" than them. Heck, as you can see us geeks even have forums where we post our results like it really means something. I follow all the Tiger results and people on those forums know me as the Tiger fan.
It's pretty fun but also pretty geeky.

We're hitting June...
June 1, 1952 (DH)
Detroit 4, Washington 3
Matt Batts doubled, stole third and then scored on Johnny Lipon's RBI-fly out in the top of the ninth to break a 3-3 tie and lead the Tigers to the win. Cliff Mapes als had a solo homer and an RBI-single to lead teh Tiger offense. The winning hurler was Marlin Stuart who allowed just one earned run in eight innings. Dick Littlefield tossed 2/3rds of an inning to earn the save.
Eddie Yost led Washington with three singles.
Washington 3, Detroit 2 (10 innings)
This time it was the Senators that won on late-game heroics. IN the bottom of the ninth Jackie Jensen had an RBI-walk against Ted Gray to tie the game. Then in the 10th, Gil Coan walked, Jim Busby walked, Clyde Kluttz sacrificed them over to second and third, Mel Hoderlein hit a rare-play single that didn't plate a run and then Archie Wilson provided the game-winning RBI-single.
Sid Hudson allowed just two runs in nine innings but only got a no-decision. Tom Ferrick got the win with a perfect shutout 10th inning.
Detroit 18-22
Washington 6-3
The Tigers are still way above their projected record. They were 50-104 during the actual 1952 season.

June 3, 1952
Philadelphia 4, Detroit 3 (10 innings)
Virgil Trucks loaded the bases with one out and then Elmer Valo singled in Skeeter Kell, who singled, to drive in the game-winner in the bottom of the 10th. The Athletics scored their runs in many strange ways with only one run being earned - the final one. In the first a single and error by Steve Souchock off of Gus Zernial's bat plated Eddie Joost from second base. In the fifth an error off of Elmer Valo's bat allowed Hank Majeski's bases loaded walk to score Valo and that was followed by Dave Philley's groundout that scored Ferris Fain. That would've been the third out without the error.
Detroit did tied it in the ninth with an RBI-double by Don Kolloway while Walt Dropo had an RBI-triple earlier. Steve Souchock had an RBI-single as well.
Alex Kellner went the first nine innings for the Athletics but relief pitcher Johnny Kucab got the win with one inning of shutout relief.

June 4, 1952

Bobby Shantz tossed a four-hitter and never allowed more than one baserunner in any inning to lead the Athletics to the victory. Pete Suder had two RBIs with one coming on a flyout and the other coming on a single.
Billy Hoeft went seven innings and took the loss, allowing both runs onf ive hits and a walk. He also hit two batters and committed a balk.
Detroit 19-24 (this is the worst the Tigers' record has been so far)

Sorry, I should've posted this awhile ago. You are going to see some new names and some others disappear. We had this transation recently...
June 3: The Tigers pick up Walt Dropo, Johnny Pesky, Fred Hatfield, Don Lenhardt and Bill Wight from Boston for George Kell, Hoot Evers and Dizzy Trout.
Too bad to see Kell go, but wait until you see how Dropo does. He's really been one of the Tiger leaders. Of course I'll take a little time to get all those results posted here.

Boston 6, Detroit 3
The Red Sox scored four runs in the seventh to make a 3-2 deficit to a 6-3 lead that they would never lose. During that innnig the big hit was a three-run double by Dick Gernert. Another run-producing hit was provided by starting pitcher Bill Henry who went the distance on the mound, allowing just five hits. Two of them were homers - a two-run shot by Steve Souchock and a solo shot by Don Lenhardt.

Detroit 6, Boston 3
Everytime I think the Tigers are doomed to go deep below .500 they come up with another win streak. They won their third straight as Virgil Trucks went the distance on the mound, allowing seven hits and four walks while striking out seven. Offensively, Cliff Mapes hit a solo homer while Johnny Pesky had two RBIs with one coming on a single and another on a ground out. Jerry Priddy also hit an RBI-single. Three of the Tiger runs were unearned. Little used Ken Wood hit a two-run homer for the Boston Red Sox.
