For the first time ever, a legally authorized government issue silver dollar has been struck to commemorate the World Trade Center and the new Freedom Tower being erected in its place. It's the U.S. territorial minting of the 2004 "Freedom Tower" Silver Dollar from CNMI. Most importantly, each coin has been clad in .999 Pure Silver recovered from Ground Zero!

I'm not sure if you just posted this as a topic of interest or what but I feel like rambling this morning and no one is here at work yet.

There really was a vault below the world trade center tower and it did contain bars of pure silver and gold. All of the silver and gold was recovered. The vaults remained in tact through the destruction of the building. The heat that was created from the fire actually became hot enough inside the vault to partially melt some of the bars. Pure gold melts at a temperature of 1945 degrees Farenheit. These coins are actually made from the silver that was recovered. But even though they are from the reclaimed silver they still are only worth $6.76 per troy Oz. as of this mornings New York open fix price.

Commerative Silver coins came out soon after 9/11 picturing the world trade center towers and also another design with the well known picture of the firemen. These coins also sold at a premium, although not as high as what they are asking here, but still high.
Right now those coins will not even bring in the spot price of $6.76, most dealers will actually pay under that if asked to buy them.

They may be of interest as a curiousity piece, but it will be a long, long, long time before they are ever worth anything more than an Ounce of Silver.

Interesting......and to think I nearly wasted my hard earned cash.

It seemed exploitative to me. Perhaps a cultural misunderstanding between these island people and ourselves.

It think it's interesting how the blurb never mentions very clearly which government is issuing these coins. The quoted part only states the initials: CNMI.

And if you look on the website, you'll notice that the full name it only listed once, at the very top, above the major headline:

CNMI, the U.S. Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, announces a limited release with....

Obviously the intention is to lead the people to believe that this are issued by the US Mint, when they are not.

Additionally, the coins are CLAD in silver. I'm not an expert in these matters, but I didn't find anywhere that it said it was solid silver. Lots of talk about how pure the silver was, not not if it was solid silver. Of course, again repeating that it was .999 pure silver helps to lead people to believe that the whole coin is .999 pure silver where in reality, the statement only refers to how pure the small amount of silver used is.

I believe that the line "100 Mil .999 Pure Silver" might mean that there is 100 milligrams of silver in this coin. If that's right, that means there is just a very small fraction of an ounce of silver in these coins.

Very deceptive advertizing if you ask me...

If this "dollar" is priced at more than a dollar, anybody at all would be plumb foolish to buy one.

Biff isn't foolish at all, he said he didn't buy one. What he didn't say is that he actually bought two!

Upon actually reading the ad this time I have to issue a retraction.
That coin is indeed only Silver Plate, not solid like I originally thought. Thanks to RR for pointing this out.
When they say "100 mil .999 pure silver" they are refering to the thickness of the silver plating over the base metal used to make the coin as well as the purity of the silver plating. 100 mils is equal to about 1/10,000 of an inch, as a point of reference a standard 1 oz. Silver American Eagle coin is about 1/8th of an inch thick.

That's one of those things better left to subtlety.

Pretty much everything we'd worked out:

1. They're not US government issued

2. They're plated, not solid silver.

We didn't bring up the possibility that the silver isn't really from what was in the WTC, but I don't know that we know for certain that it wasn't either at this point.
