I'm on the side that believes the Giants would have signed him even if the Tigers offered arb. Sabean has demonstrated a degree of disregard for draft picks and prospects before, most recently including Alderson in the Sanchez trade.

Sabean had disregard for draft picks when they had a veteran laden team headlined with Barry Bonds. Since his retirement things have changed. WOTS was that Alderson wasn't the prospect everyone thought he was.
Every situation is different but I'm hoping your right and they go for Polanco.
