I'm on the side that believes the Giants would have signed him even if the Tigers offered arb. Sabean has demonstrated a degree of disregard for draft picks and prospects before, most recently including Alderson in the Sanchez trade.

I think they would have reduced their offer to closer to 2 yrs $10 mil and he would have strongly considered accepting Arbitration, getting a minimum of $8 mil for 1 year (on top of the $3 mil we already paid him) making our commitment to him the same as what he would have gotten if we didn't buy him out.
I don't think they would have given him the same contract knowing they were going to lose the pick. While Sabean has shown he isn't as concerned about losing picks as other GM's, he has also started to take some heat for it and especially on the questionable Type A's I think he would have been more cautious.
