Yes there were, but the very well could have been contingent on him not being offered arbitration. If they didn't care, they could have just signed him before. I think in Renteria's case, it is extremely unlikely he gets that contract from SF if he was offered arbitration and as he had no value to the 2009 Tigers, it was a risk they could not afford to take.
