Billy Sims BBQ Opens in Southfield

August 24th, 2012 in Lions

Most fans of the Detroit Lions probably remember Billy Sims for winning the 1978 Heisman while playing for the Oklahoma Sooners, or for being drafted by the Lions with the first overall pick in the 1980 Draft.

20120824-141614.jpgBilly had a great, but unfortunately short NFL career with the Lions finishing as their all time rushing leader, only to be surpassed later by Barry Sanders.  Today Billy Sims is the second all-time leading rusher on the Lions in both yardage and touchdowns scored.

What Lions fans probably didn’t know is that for the last several years, Billy has been busy opening a chain of barbecue restaurants in Oklahoma and Missouri. Today, he is opening his 24th location and first in the metro Detroit area.

The newest Billy Sims Barbecue franchise is located at 25025 Telegraph Road (just north of Ten Mile Road) in Southfield.

Later this year Billy will be opening up his second franchise in Michigan, to be located in Lincoln Park.

To celebrate the opening, Billy Sims and fellow Detroit Lions alumnus, Steve Owens will host an in-store appearance at the Southfield Billy Sims Barbecue Saturday, September 8 from 11am-8pm.

The restaurant is open 11am-9pm Sunday-Thursday and 11am-10 pm Friday and Saturday. The phone number to the Southfield restaurant is 248-809-2861.

I was kindly invited to stop in for their “Friends and Family” event yesterday afternoon and was able to sample some of the food available at Billy Sims BBQ. Although the menu was limited for this event, the food I tasted was great and the Sweet and Mild BBQ sauce was wonderful! Billy was on hand and was busy chatting with folks, while bussing tables and helping keep the lobby clean. He was doing it all!
